Watched through the first half of #Rockets-#Mavericks on my lunch break! Great to be back watching after a summer away :). And hey, the team looks pretty good at first glance! A few thoughts in a thread: 🧵 #NBASky

And joy of joys, it's basketball I can watch during my regular awake hours! What a pleasant surprise! I think I might take a long late lunchbreak to watch it.

If that claim at the bottom about sums of reciprocals being less than 1 (or more properly 2 if you include the 1/1 term) is indeed correct then this is actually quite beautiful to me (even if the counterexample fraction is obscene).

The world is a dumpster fire, let's talk ball. One of my fave things about NBA Threads V1 was that the community spanned across so many teams* and that made the whole season way more fun. If you're a hoops fan and a good human that does more than shit posting throw an intro below so we can follow!

Feels great to be able to watch NBA basketball again! Even if it's preseason. Even if it's Hornets vs Nets. Even if Charlotte are missing three starters.

An underrated part of GB News' success is the rise of Smart TVs. It used to be that freeview boxes would always default to BBC, ITV, C4 etc. But Smart TVs have no such default - when I turned mine on GB News was on the list of channels it played by default and the BBC was not!

As someone who plays in chess tournaments occasionally, I fully empathize with this approach. You've got to take every opportunity to beat kids when they're young, because in a few years' time they'll be blowing you off the board. One of the few places it is socially acceptable to make a kid cry!

You're underestimating the hitting power of a salmon. Trust me on this. But if you're looking for a good fish based offensive weapon I can't recommend the belt fish highly enough. You simply can't get more controllable reach with a fish. (Used like a whip.)

This is definitely a thing - the primacy of American politics across the Anglosphere is driven by the shared language on sites like this. I would LOVE to hear less about it and more about cockroaches etc., but if you want to talk about the NBA you have to listen to Americans talk about stuff, so...

Had the weirdest childhood flashback today. A random conversation reminded me of the time I lived in Denmark as a kid and we went to a strange candy-themed amusement park that gave you sweets in the shape of boobs. It was all very confusing to an 11 year old! And it turns out I wasn't hallucinating!

My girlfriend planted mangelwurzel in the garden this year, and she dug one up today. Look at this monster!
A massive mangelwurzel with pink roots, dwarfing the hands that it is held in. It's about a foot long!

There is truth to what you say, but also: that's what the Feeds are for! You want a break from doom and gloom? Go look at the bird feed, or the cat feed, or one of the art feeds, or the marine life feed, or the craft feed... There are so many cool people doing interesting things.

It's also precisely in the sweet spot for the stereotypical 37-year-old BlueSky user to have seen at the right age for it to become a memetic piece of pop culture, so you should expect it to be widely known and quoted here!

How did the cricket go today? Well...
A man wearing sunglasses has his hands on his hips. He is wearing a shirt covered in pictures of rubber ducks. He also sports a bucket hat with the same pattern.

I think this gets at something important about AI. There are lots of different ways to use it, and some are neutral or even beneficial to learning (while others cause brainrot). The challenge we have at the moment is articulating the different approaches so we can pick the right one for the job.

Bit of a longshot, but does anyone have any recommendations for cool things to do in Tallinn? Going there next week. So far on my list: - Spend a day in this place: elamusspa.ee/en/elamus-spa/. Apparently they have 22 different saunas? Sounds incredible. - Estonian Fringe Festival! - ... - Profit!

I ran a Beer* Mile today! Never done that before. The format: - 4 cans of drink - 4 laps of a track - Drink one can before each lap. Turns out the running was fine but I suck at drinking quickly! *I don't drink alcohol, so I was actually doing Dr Pepper. Baaaad choice.

Was able to get a reasonable view of the eclipse through the use of my trusty colander!
A colander is held between the sun and a sheet of white paper. The holes show a pattern indicating the sun is partially obscured.Another shot of the colander acting as a bunch of pinholes to show the eclipse in progress.

Man, that was embarrassing. It was obvious from the moment Tuchel took Gordon off it was a mistake. Argentina looked at all the space down that side and just started raining crosses. It would be one thing if they did that with 10 minutes to go. But with 25? Ugh.

There's a running gag on British quiz show Only Connect in which the presenter explains that there's been a change to the schedule and what's coming next is a travel show featuring Michael Portillo. youtu.be/IBD6MF-UQD4?... They're always filthy and I can never guess the title.

I feel like in every major football tournament I've watched in thr last 20 years, Switzerland have featured in the most boring game. Switzerland-Ukraine 2006 sets the standard for dullness in WC knockouts in my mind.

As someone who watches a lot of NBA games the next morning (too old to stay up for them anymore), I am intimately familiar with this issue. You try your hardest not to look at the length of the timeline at the bottom, but there comes a point where you know if it's going to overtime!

One of the sports I like to watch every summer is the Tour de France. Cycling is simultaneously a terrible and brilliant sport to watch: - You know who the fastest rider is and they're likely to win. - There are so many prizes to fight for there's lots of different ways for it to be interesting.

One of the best skills you can develop in the information age is the ability to say "enough". You're never going to be able to be perfect, you need to be able to know when to say that you're doing good enough because there are a lot of people with financial incentives to push you to perfect.

In my office at work we have some whiteboards in the room where we eat lunch. For the past few months I've put up brackets to determine people's favourite foodstuffs. It's a fun conversation starter. Anyway, today I unveiled my latest creation. Behold, the Fruit World Cup! Who've you got?
An alternative set of World Cup pools where each team is replaced with a fruit.
Pool A: Avocado, Lychee, Pomeroy, Persimmon
Pool B: Blueberry, Elderberry, Coconut, Jackfruit
Pool C: Banana, Watermelon, Greengage, Aloe
Pool D: Cranberry, Redcurrant, Passionfruit, Kumquat
Pool E: Cherry, Cape Gooseberry, Plantain, Papaya
Pool F: Strawberry, Satsuma, Blackcurrant, GrapefruitPool G: Peach, Guava, Pomegranate, Kiwi
Pool H: Orange, Starfruit, Honeydew, Plum
Pool I: Grape, Mango, Date, Raspberry
Pool J: Pear, Fig, Cantaloupe, Gooseberry
Pool K: Lemon, Dragonfruit, Apricot, Pineapple
Pool L: Apple, Nectarine, Blackberry, Lime

Never say never. Even when the lottery balls did fall the #Rockets way it still took 11 years & luck (thank you Nuggets) to win a ring. Gonna be harder for teams to retain their players going forward with the new salary rules. Free Agents will be there to be had & teams won't stay on top forever

I didn't see this thread when @brianphillips.lol was using it as a source of input, but I firmly believe that autoplaying video is the root of a lot of societal problems today. You don't get to start playing distracting moving pictures at me without my express consent, Mr. Website Man!

This is particularly obvious when you read science fiction written a while ago. Every work is tinged with "how we think about things now", even when looking forward to the future. You can learn a lot about 1930s sexism by reading the Lensman series, or Cold War anxieties by reading LeGuin.

Ads with autoplaying video you couldn't turn off were the thing that pushed me over the edge. If anything plays me a video without me hitting the play button, it's getting closed immediately unless there's a setting to turn it off (and on Twitter there wasn't!)

Presumably this is an unintended consequence rather than something the NBA actively considered. But maybe they should have done? And if they haven't put out a product to let commercial properties get access to everything they're being derelict in their duties IMO.

Rob Dover @boredtrevor.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Agreed. Both will make a difference, but are not the solution in and of themselves. IMO what's missing is playmaking depth. Rather than a DFS type on the bench, ideally they'd have someone more like a Tim Hardaway Jr. in that roster slot. We've got enough defensive wings, need some shotmaking.

Tough way to end the season for the #Rockets. They fought hard, but the adjustment from the #Lakers of not doubling Sengun was clearly the right one and they just couldn't find enough offense to compete in Game 6. I've got some general thoughts about the team heading into the off season. Thread 🧵:
