Brilliant post. Lots of family cycling info is based on young kids and this provides a great perspective for older kids.

Questions to the First Minister today around pavement parking elicited a 'lets see what happens in England and go from there' response. Another chance to remind ourselves that banning pavement parking was a 2021 manifesto commitment with a further commitment in-government to banning by 2023.

(Not about cycling but…) Apart from the cringy bits about Welsh-only constituency names, this discussion on the election is one of the best bits of reporting so far. Have UK Labour really written off Wales? Are the MPs and MSs really still in the same party? www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

This (and free school meals) will be the real triumphs of the current Welsh Government. The change seems to have stuck. (Despite media stirring up noise, despite some councils using it as a chance to take a pop at WG, and despite the police publicly saying they won’t bother to enforce.)

Was it @ianwalker.bsky.social who was looking for motonormativity examples in policies? I mean what other situation would mean your local council allocating additional public space for you to store your private property because you’d run of space at home?

From a pure active travel perspective the SFS has totally missed the opportunity to engage farmers in providing 'behind the hedge' routes which would give huge environmental benefits by encouraging modal shift for just a small loss of land Instead, just an optional around improving (walking) access

This will be amazing but I'm still of the view that TfW should be running a (procured, externally operated) scheme which can be extended across Wales and includes integration at stations. This would really help micromobility extend in to smaller towns etc

I’ve got a simple solution… (From the report): “76% of pupils transported less than three miles to mainstream secondary schools using school transport and 52% of primary school children transported less than two miles do so because their routes to school are deemed too hazardous to walk.”

Brilliant paper. Interventions can break habitual routines, like taking the car, and open new opportunities and benefits. We need more behaviour change approaches to encourage people to go car-free (or rather car-ownership free)

The Daily Post says the decision not to speed up the roads “divided opinion”. 16 on one side of the divide, 71,500 on the other. Counties a bit closer to me could learn a lot from councillors and MSs in Ceredigion’s decision not to politicise road safety.

And that £2bn is capital build, never mind the drain on prosperity that long term maintenance and induced demand will cause. But the briefing to the BBC spins the waste as a positive thing because it reflects the flip flop on building new roads for roads sake.

Catching up on @activetravelcaf.bsky.social and there’s a really interesting talk on wayfinding. I’m a huge believer in the power of positive wayfinding in growing cycling and awareness. Too often it’s not clear where cyclists CAN or should be. Here’s a thread of my least and most favourite signs!

Benefits of rail* investment (like the planned extra trains on the Borderlands line) are multiplied by combining with multi-modal infra as cheap as cycle racks. This map shows 15mins by bike from stations on the line. If you live & travel along this multicoloured chain you can do this right now

Not sure what is more shameful, the blatant ignoring of clear data of the safety improvements 20 has made or the frothing excitement of those ‘returning’ roads as if 30 is some sort of innate speed endowed from the heavens.
