Wales’ Health Minister unveils new NHS accountability framework
Problems in the Welsh NHS will be spotted and addressed before they become serious issues, Wales' health minister has said. Mabon ap Gwynfor updated Senedd Members on Tuesday (September 29) on a review of the effectiveness of NHS Wales' current system - the 'Escalation and Intervention Framework'. After speaking with health board bosses, Mabon ap Gwynfor said a new method had been designed to “provide a single, coherent approach". This would allow NHS bodies to fix faults, with the right support, before the need for formal escalation. He said: “The aim of these changes is to give the people of Wales greater confidence that NHS services receive the necessary support to respond to challenges and improve."

Minimum unit price of alcohol to rise to 65p in Wales
The minimum unit price of alcohol (MUP) will rise in Wales from 50p to 65p, with the changes coming into effect from today. The Welsh Government said the move aims to tackle alcohol-related harm by reducing alcohol consumption among hazardous and harmful drinkers. Experts believe the move coming into force today could prevent more than 900 alcohol-related deaths and help nearly 5,000 people cut down on harmful drinking in Wales over the next 20 years. Wales will now charge the same minimum price as Scotland. As part of independent evaluations in January 2025, the Operation and Effect Report in June 2025 and subsequent consultation on the continuation and increase of the minimum price found that the 50p rate has been impacted by inflation and reduced its value in real terms to 39p in 2020 prices.

Councillor backs extra Kop seats but wants Section 106 deal to protect possible parking impact
Cllr Phil Wynn has asked Wrexham Council to approve 2,250 extra seats in Wrexham AFC's new Kop Stand, subject to a legally binding Section 106 agreement to deal with any matchday parking impact on nearby residential streets. In August, Cllr Wynn asked for any approval to be tied to a planning condition requiring the club to fund a residents' parking scheme if monitoring showed problems. His final submission, shared with Wrexham.com, argues for a Section 106 legal obligation to firm up that 'ask'. "Legally binding mechanism" Cllr Wynn said: "While the proposed Travel Plan and associated planning conditions provide an important framework for monitoring travel behaviour and parking demand, I believe they should be supported by a legally binding mechanism to ensure that, should monitoring demonstrate significant parking displacement into residential streets, the necessary mitigation measures can be properly funded and delivered."

Pause in scheduled treatments for trans patients “unacceptable”, says Wales Greens leader
The leader of the Wales Green Party has suggested the pause in scheduled treatments for trans patients sets a “dangerous precedent”. Caerdydd Penarth MS, Anthony Slaughter, raised the issue in a short debate on Wednesday September 23, adding: “This is not an ideological debate; everyone in Wales is entitled to NHS healthcare.” Noting that gender-affirming surgery has been available on the NHS since the 1960s, Mr Slaughter said: “This is not experimental treatment and this should not be considered a controversial area of medicine. “It is a well-established and highly studied area of medicine that the NHS has a legal and statutory duty to provide.”

Concerns that new ‘ethical framework’ to Wales’ defence sector could cost jobs
Opposition parties have expressed concern that a new 'ethical framework' to Wales' defence sector could cost jobs. Plaid Cymru's enterprise minister Adam Price said the Welsh Government was "committed to international solidarity, respect for human rights and the rule of international law". While acknowledging growing “geopolitical instability”, he said support for the defence sector in Wales could not be "unconditional". Speaking in the Senedd on Tuesday September 22, he said: "Democratic societies have a legitimate right to defend themselves and that the defence, security and resilience sectors play an important role in protecting the freedoms and values that we hold dear.”

Calls for return of Wrexham recycling mascot ‘Recycle with Michael’
Wrexham councillors have called for the return of a beloved recycling mascot character and the revival of a schools education programme as part of a wider push to improve the county borough's recycling rates. The whereabouts of "Recycle with Michael," a character who once visited communities and events to promote recycling across the county borough, were raised during a meeting of the council's homes and environment scrutiny committee on Wednesday, 23 September. Michael shot to local fame in 2002, when he was introduced by Wrexham Council to encourage recycling and raise awareness of the then pink and green kerbside recycling sacks, along with the green bin for garden waste.
