Yes. I was looking for jumpers the other week. Nothing but black, grey or mud brown. I came home without.

Popped to M&S this morning for a winter coat. Do they think people my age only go to funerals? I want something bright and cheerful to make winter less gloomy.

'From everything that man erects and builds in his urge for living nothing is in my eyes better and more valuable than bridges.' Ivo Andrić As the daughter- in-law of a bridge designer, I love this.
Burscough Bridge crossing the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Burscough, West Lancashire. The photo shows a stone/concrete road bridge arch with a cobbled towpath alongside and historic canalside buildings nearby.

'Whenever a government feels the need of promising peace and prosperity to its citizens by means of a proclamation, it is time to be on guard and expect the opposite.' Ivo Andrić, Yugoslav (would now be Bosnian) novelist, poet and short story writer, born on this day in 1892.

365 Days of Positivity Day 282 Good morning. It's a dreary day and, the same is predicted for the weekend ahead, but I have many apples left from our trees so I think comfort baking will take place and reading with Chai lattés and fairy lights beneath snuggly blankets so all will be well.

Flu jab jabbed, now time to enjoy a quiet evening with my book and possibly catch up on an episode of Poirot. Feeling sleepy these days. Like my mum always said about herself, I'm sure I was meant to hibernate through the darker months.

Painting of the day - Fidelity by Briton Rivière, Lady Lever Art Gallery.
Painting of a young poacher and his faithful dog awaiting trial. The young man's face is hidden so the dog's compassion is the centre of the composition.

Apparently, I now have my own QR code! Point your phone at it & it takes you to MY BOOK. No idea how. No mice inside. Disappointing. 🙄 Could you give it a little share & help more people discover me? The FC calls it word of mouth. I prefer word of MEOWTH. 😹🧡🐾

So sad to hear that the iconic, trailblazing, Apollo 11 moon landing software engineering lead, Margaret Hamilton, is no longer with us. Love this image of her, standing next to a print out of the software that landed Buzz Aldrin and Neil Amstrong on the moon! 👩‍🔬🔭🛰️🧪 ℹ️: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

365 Days of Positivity Day 281 Today, I get my flu jab. Having once had flu - ill for three weeks, practically bedridden for one, I am so grateful for this. Modern science can be pretty wonderful. Very grateful for this.

I was studying Welsh. There are mutations. For example Bangor can become Mangor or Fangor. It would change them but not say why so I had no idea a when to change. It also interchange North and South Welsh - eg Llaeth or llefrith for milk without telling me which was which. Hopeless.

Janet @bookwormjan.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I kept shouting at it "Why do I use mutations? Why is it Bangor, Fangor or Mangor and which do I use?" I had no idea whether to use llefrith or Llaeth for milk in North or South Wales 🤷‍♀️

I have given up on Duolingo too. I was so fed up. It maybe okay for revising a language you already know but not to learn a new one. My daughter is giving me the books and cds from the course she did when studying Welsh while at university in Wales. I hope you find something soon x

I've finally decided to give up on Duolingo. It's not great at teaching conversational Welsh and now I can't even get that owl off my back because, as you can see, it doesn't even record my lessons as I complete them. Been the same for over a week 🤷 Will find a proper Welsh study guide.

Art dealer CJ Wertheimer felt that a picture of two beautiful young girls was worth far more than a picture of two beautiful young girls & an elderly matron so had Mrs Paine removed. In 1935, the Lady Lever Trustees restored the picture to Reynolds’s original composition.

It is on display at Lady Lever Art Gallery. Apparently when Lever purchased the painting it had the title ‘Portraits of the Misses Paine’. Mrs Paine, who is seen on the left supervising her daughters at the piano, had been painted out of the picture.

'A woman who writes feels too much, those trances and portents! As if cycles and children and islands weren't enough; as if mourners and gossips and vegetables were never enough. She thinks she can warm the stars. A writer is essentially a spy. Dear love, I am that girl.' Anne Sexton, BOTD in 1928.

I was decidedly grumpy yesterday. We went out for a meal and an exceptionally busy staff accidentally served me chicken curry instead of tofu curry. In the thick sauce I didn't notice till I took a bite and was quite upset. I nearly ruined a lovely evening but calmed down to enjoy the concert.
