one time my girlfriend was waiting for a bus in Pittsburgh and looking at a martial arts advertisement and a guy in a public works truck rolled down his window and told her “don’t go to that dojo, I challenged the master and he was weak as fuck”

There's one belief that unites a number of parts of the emergent R coalition: -Roganite talkers -loser techlords -estranged parents -faux-intellectual bigots (sorry, "New Right") And that belief is "It should be illegal to be mean to me"

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a little dog is sleeping on a couch, kicking its paws. A person says, “look! The little kicks!” Panel 2: in awe of the cuteness, the person continues, “what do you think he’s dreaming about?” Panel 3: in the dog’s dream, the pup is wearing a captain’s jacket, holding tightly to a wooden ship on stormy seas. In his other paw, he is gripping a harpoon as an enormous vacuum cleaner breaches violently from the water.

audience capture is very real, and the severity of its impact is downstream of how close you are to your audience. Streamers and content creators have suffered from this mightily over the past several years. But working at an august institution doesn't insulate you, just adds addl incentives

Incentives for pundits/writers when you're working under an AG Sulzberger or a Pamela Paul or a Jeffrey Goldberg or a David Dayen or a Bari Weiss aren't solely about intriguing your audience. It's about convincing *the boss* that you're doing so. Tony Dokoupil didn't get where he is thru journalism

More pointedly, there are few prizes for providing something your readers don't want but even fewer prizes for something your editors don't want. The biz side of these outlets are as financialized as any other industry, and decided that making readers *feel informed* is the quickest way to get there

It's immensely self-flattering, when you get a sense that your organization's coverage is missing the mark, to be able to say "this is what the people want, I'm just responding to audience incentives". Allows you to play truthteller when that's not actually the thing you're doing

The acting was across-the-board excellent. Cruise/Goodman/Hüller/Plemons deserve all the praise they're getting, and Riz Ahmed's Chaplin-tier mugging was a delight (and a surprise given the last thing I saw him in was THE SOUND OF METAL)

I don't agree with Neil Young on this but "The best film Neil Young has ever seen" is a pretty good approximation of where it lands on the pessimism/optimism scale
Blog post from Neil Young's site reviewing Digger. The review is summed up in its first sentence: "Digger is the best film I have ever seen."

I think a lot of broadly intellectual people tend to engage in political discourse as a means of absolution, and those ppl are not going to enjoy a film that refuses to absolve anybody

In a twisted authoritarian spectacle, federal agents raided Ilhan Omar's home this morning. Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the Congresswoman – frequently using racist, tyrannical drivel to express an unhinged desire to expel her from the country.

Trump uses DHS and DOJ as weapons to go after the people standing up to him. Raiding @ilhanmn.bsky.social home weeks before Election Day is the kind of overreach that should scare every single American. I stand with Ilhan. We will never be intimidated into silence.

This is a gross abuse of power & the latest in a decade-long, racist smear campaign against a duly elected Black Congresswoman. Trump is a coward who is weaponizing his DOJ to fuel hate & intimidate opponents with baseless attacks like these, just like with Rep. McIver, Lisa Cook & Tish James.

Trump's continued attacks on @repilhan.bsky.social the Somali American community, & our Muslim neighbors are a heinous attempt to distract from his complete & utter failure as president. Every American should be chilled to the bone: these are the actions of a dictatorship not a democracy.
Federal agents search Rep. Ilhan Omar’s D.C. home

The search appears to be the type of action that law enforcement officials typically avoided so close to an election in the past.

Agents search Rep. Omar's Washington home in criminal probe as she vows she won't 'be silenced'
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar says she will “not be silenced” and calls a search of her Washington home the “latest escalation” in President Donald Trump’s “intimidation” campaign.

I’m outraged by this attack on Representative Omar. Trump and his DOJ have a bizarre obsession with tearing down Minnesota, our leaders and our communities. This latest action, even as voting has already started in Minnesota, is a transparent attempt to interfere in our elections.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

One big takeaway for me from '24 is that a plurality of *moveable voters* in the US are not really engaging with "politics" or political news culture except through cultural osmosis. This is deeply alien to people who either make a living in the field or spend their time agonizing over it

I'm glad to see the NYT finally start to acknowledge this, but there's a shorthand for Susan Collins-style "moderation" that they never convey here - Collins will *never* be the 51st vote against a Trumo priority. She'll be the 53rd vote against or the 50th vote for it. Reliably GOP when it counts

It's not hard. Both Yglesias moderates and Khanna leftists give MAGA politicians legitimacy because they want MAGA's base. Ossoff simply does not give a shit about the MAGA base, which allows him to speak with fierce clarity about MAGA politicians. He is willing to bet on an anti-MAGA majority.
