These are excellent. Very clear and very interesting. So I have other questions though! What about A White Christmas? Does this mean that the whole premise for the film is wrong? And so what does it mean if a bank is ‘under-capitalised’? How does interest free lending work?

Interesting, so why does the Govt sell bonds? I.e. why do they borrow money?

Indeed it is. I remember learning about climate change for my A levels in 1981.

Part of me wants to say go stick a finger in quickly, but actually that’s worrying and just another impact that I have never thought about. Here we haven’t had meaningful rain since May and trees are dying.

Did BBC radio 4 #Today programme really just do a whole package about drilling in the N Sea without once even mentioning #climate change? And not having anyone challenging the one-sided claims of former BP boss? So irresponsible #bbcr4today

You might have formed the impression that Paul Johnson, former director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, knows what he's talking about. The media treats him like the voice of God. But here he is - and not for the first time - talking out of his hat. Let's break it down in a short thread. 🧵
This is utter garbage. I believe in net zero. We need to get there. But renewables are not competitive. That's why they are subsidised. Fossil fuel markets are highly competitive. It shouldn't be hard to hold these two thoughts at the same time.

Spoke to the Guardian about the idea of quitting LLMs for climate: -“I see this all as very much part of the tactic of trying to embed these systems into society and instil dependency in a fashion similar to the growth of single-use plastics in the 1970s.” www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
“Consumer software that generates text, images and videos are uniquely energy inefficient,” says Ketan Joshi, an Oslo-based climate analyst associated with the Australia Institute, due to the “vast datasets and computational strain of pattern-matching that happens underneath the hood”.

Asking an AI chatbot a question consumes a great deal more energy than finding the answer via simple web search or calculator. It adds extra demand for no good reason, he says, a bit like driving to the shops in an SUV instead of riding your bike.

“You might still get the shopping done, and that single trip alone may not even look all that bad in terms of cost or emissions, but what happens when that’s all of your trips, and when all of society starts doing this?”

Tonight Kertasníkir (Candle Stealer), the last of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He steals candles (that used to be made from animal fat) and eats them. Children leave their shoes out in the window, he gives the good ones a small gift, the bad ones get a potato.
Kertasníkir has a white beard and is wearing a red hat and is holding a bunch of candles. Illustration by Brian Pilkington.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

You can add up all the enjoyable pursuits of LLMs and the work productivity hacks and none of them, separately or together, will be more important than AI’s ecological costs or political disruption. “We” is more important here.

Not even 9am. So far on Radio 6, the news bulletins have featured a mother saying her daughters aren't safe because of asylum seekers, a Tory politician lambasting Labour for crossing numbers & Badenoch encouraging councils to lodge legal challenges against hotels. An endless stream of hateful bile.
