Old 2000 AD really knew how to bring the good stuff to the cover party.

ON the cover of AD 2000 #417, Strontium Dog rumbles across an orange wasteland to the right as a convoy of mutant wasteland denizens push through a cloud of dust atop their various motor-chariots led by the magnificently bearded Wulf Sternhammer and ol' knobby headed Middenface McNulty who shouts "Oot O' the way there! Stronty Dug Comin' Through!"
The front-page banner 'explains' that ... "In the badlands of Burrito *THE BIG BUST IS GO!*"

I can't be the only one in the States collecting 2000 AD, who's had a real challenge finding the appropriate size bags and boards for the early few hundred Progs when they were pure newsprint and 9 1/4" X 11 ¼". Turns out Sheet Music Boards work just fine! www.bcwsupplies.com/sheet-music-...

Alan Davis is one of the greatest overall artists of the last 50 years. Top of the field for esthetics, storytelling, draftsmanship, life acting, action, and especially humor. I'll never get how he's not mentioned in the same context as Kubert, Toth, Ditko, Adams, Wrightson, Lee, Gibbons, etc.

Found this lovely bit of hagiography for Mrs. Chiang Kai-shek in the back of Wonder Woman #6 from 1943. Honestly wasn't expecting that. This is why originals are better than reprint collections if you can get them. Sooo much cultural context in the back matter.

I've done a few commissions with a few artists and I cannot reccomend @stazjohnson.bsky.social highly enough. One of the best engagements. Proffesional, responsive, reasonably accommodating, and the finished piece was WAY better than I'd hoped for. The whole process genuinely brought me joy.

Duncan let me and Jess watch ROGUE TROOPER last night and HOLY FUCKING SHIT, GANG! It's sooooo fucking good. Hilarious, fun, hard-R violent, adapted straight from the pages of the comic. 2000AD fans are gonna lose their minds, and just try not to throw a fist in the air at the final needle drop. 🤯🤯🤯

Poster for Rogue Trooper with several characters scattered acrossed a desolate landscape, while a huge tank with two cannons hangs in the background.

Rogue Trooper (a muscular blue super soldier) stares down a huge tank, holding a machine gun, standing next to a backpack (named Bagman).

Stylish character poster for the film, with many characters on it ala most big budget comic books and sci fi movies, with Rogue Trooper featured prominently.

A shot from the film: Rogue Trooper (19) looks into the camera while the voices of Bagman and Gunnar joke with him through their implanted chips, represented on screen as small, floating digital readouts with skulls, their numbers (26 and 20 respectively), and names.

Doing connecting covers is tons of fun but also a little tricky: do you focus on one big picture (each cover being a puzzle piece, like I did on my TRANSFORMERS covers) or do you try to tell a story through the covers? (Like I did recently on my TWILIGHT ZONE covers) When @skybound.bsky.social asked

Thumbnail of the 4 connecting covers with Frankenstein monster spread through all 4 covers and the final covers together showing several moments of the story

Last one I could find: I do think there's potential here and it's always fun to hear what people would choose.

Three illustrated choices:

Pick your foe. Accept a life-long enemy but live as long as you fight

1. Devil dolphin emerges from any standing water. It will try to bottle-nose you into unconsciousness, eat your shoes and steal all your clothes
2. Fire falcon descends upon any group of three or more folks enjoying a laugh that you are in or near. This includes the same scenario in any media you are enjoying
3. Candy wolf appears and attacks whenever you're in proximity to sweets no matter who has them. If you move away from all treats you still must battle twice a year.

From Uri Tupka and the Gods... THIS is how you do a splash page! @mikemignola.bsky.social and Dave Stewart in perfect synchronicity execute a sublime page turn shock where color, image, and layout all convene to for a palpable moment of surprise. A wonderful example of something ONLY comics can do!

A full page illustration in Mignola's signature almost wood-cut style where our protagonist Uri Tupka (a heretical professor of theology) drops a book stabbed by a dagger in surprise as the room around him erupts into a maelstrom of crimson demons, beasts, snakes, and tortured souls around him.

Really looking forward to this. Also looking forward to how the general public will react. It's such an atypical premise and thematically challenging in these times. It's a fundamentally ant-war, anti-jingoist, pro-warrior story. Not sure how that will be recieved, but interested to see.
