I was asked recently (non-officially) about whether I'd ever do a "Director's Cut" of the Ultimates. Apart from it being a product of its time, that time long passed and, as such, should be left alone; if I did, it would be about 30% shorter, not longer. I speak from my art p.o.v

well, THAT page was the hardest I've had to work in a while. It's not time taken (though it did take a while) just all the moving parts and the way the figures had to function and many other factors. If I've done it right, the effort should be invisible and it will just read the way it needs to.

I love my job. My mileage on my career varies for many, many reasons but Redcoat is such a pleasure. Some days are better than others but then you get an issue like issue 20 and I can't draw fast enough to get the pages out of my head.

The score for Hook remains one of Williams' most melodic. Originally intended and partly shot as a musical, JW composed all the songs. The tunes remain and form the basis of all the cues and why it remains, literally, his most lyrical. A quite wonderful score without the film that spawned it.

Daniel Pemberton's score for Masters of the Universe is an absolute delight. We all loved Flash Gordon and it's clearly been influential not least with Brian May providing some licks. It makes me smile.

I hate working late. I like 'normal' sorts of hours, about 8-6. If I can start earlier I will and finish earlier too but sometimes the sheer volume of stuff that has to get done exceeds the hours available so, rarely, I'm just knocking off at 11 pm. Long day but very productive (and enjoyable).

issue 19 of RC right now and it's my longest run on anything ever. Ultimates was 13 (admittedly extra sized) issues, so was Ultimates 2, Venom was 16 issues (a couple of extra sized ones there too). 476 pages of RC so far which is actually the equivalent of almost 29 Marvel or DC monthlies.

there's nothing wrong with having a 'comfort zone' and working to constantly refine and excel at what you do within those parameters. And usually those parameters are defined by others not you. You're doing what you enjoy doing and nobody should be telling you to work outside of what you love doing.

If anybody wants to learn how to write film music I'd suggest studying Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet. Pretty much everything you need for anything in there from themes to texture and colour. Mind you, if there's one composer I can't ever do without it would be Vaughn-Williams

odd thing being 40 years in the biz. Many writers, artists, letterers, colourists & editors come up with you. Assistant editors become EiCs or publishers and creators reach new highs and new audiences. It's really lovely to see and reflect on. Then there are new generations to impress and inspire.
