It seems Drake Maye is forcing throws because they worked in practice, and that gap between practice execution and game results is now eroding trust in what he sees on Sunday. Column from the locker room: www.bostonherald.com/2026/09/27/c...

I wrote this about Palestine, Germany, Israel, genocide, Uganda, and the recent fallout from the Robert Kraft/Ed Sheeran/Macklemore affair. If of interest, please share. www.musaokwonga.com/takes/genoci...
Genocide. We should probably start there. Genocide, the act that Israel is still committing against Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank, is something which - as someone whose family comes from the north of Uganda - continues to shape my life. Our ethnic group endured a genocide at the hands of the Ugandan government that lasted twenty years, and the world didn’t care. It still doesn’t care, because the victims were poor and black. When Ed Sheeran’s tour began to disintegrate, as I read the response to his actions and comments, I was reminded that the greatest crime of Palestinians, committed in 1948, was to exist on the soil that Israel wanted for itself. Israel has never forgiven them for that, and perhaps it never will. It never forgave them for the Great March of Return, the 2018 protest that ended in a hail of bullets and hundreds of Palestinian deaths, a fifth of which were children.

One thing a lot of quote tweets of Slotkin’s original post are saying is that that unity didn’t happen and people are lying about it. And I think it’s really important to understand that many many many (many many) Americans did in fact feel that bond. They’re not lying, they’re just incomplete.

But I think there’s more to the relationship of fans and boredom than just magic moments. I want you to like soccer if you don’t already, so I probably shouldn’t admit this. But the game gets in your head. Following soccer is like being in love with someone who’s (a) gorgeous, (b) fascinating, (c) possibly quite evil, and (d) only occasionally aware of your existence.5 There’s a continuous low-grade suffering that becomes a sort of addiction in its own right.6 You spend all your time hoping they’ll notice you, and they never do, and that unfulfilled hope feels like your only connection to them. And then one day they look your way, and it’s just, pow. And probably they just want help moving, and maybe they call you Josie instead of Julie, but still. It keeps you going. And as irrational as it sounds, you wouldn’t trade this state of being for a life of quiet contentment with someone else. All you could gain would be peace of mind, and you’d lose that moment when the object of your fixation looked at you and you couldn’t feel your face.

Soccer is, in other words, both romantic and tragic, and the soft agony of a bad game is an inescapable part of this. You spend all your time hoping something will happen, and it never does. You get a surge of adrenaline every time the ball flies anywhere near the goal,7 and you’re always disappointed. But then, every once in a while, James McFadden will score from 30 yards at the Parc des Princes to give Scotland an impossible 1-0 lead over France, and a ponderous game will go all kinds of nervous-breakdown crazy. And for fans it’s practically an out-of-body experience — not just because it was a great play, but because it was so unlikely that this match could have been graced with a great play to begin with.

My New One at Slate: “The Supreme Court’s Conservatives Just Issued the Worst Ruling in a Century; This evisceration of the Voting Rights Act requires us to take SCOTUS reform more seriously.” @slate.com slate.com/news-and-pol...
Wednesday’s 6-3 party line decision in Louisiana v. Callais will go down in history as one of the most pernicious and damaging Supreme Court decisions of the last century. All six Republican-appointed justices on the court signed onto Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion gutting what remained of the Voting Rights Act protections for minority voters, while pretending they were merely making technical tweaks to the Act.

This decision will bleach the halls of Congress, state legislatures, and local bodies like city councils, by ending the protections of Section 2 of the Act, which had provided a pathway to assure that voters of color would have some rudimentary fair representation. It’s the culmination of the life’s work of Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito, who have shown persistent resistance to the idea of the United States as a multiracial democracy, and a brazen willingness to reject Congress’s judgment that fair representation for minority voters sometimes requires race-conscious legislation. It gives the green light to further partisan gerrymandering. It protects Alito’s core constituency: aggrieved white Republican voters. It’s a disaster for American democracy.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

One of the nuts things about organizing in the Twin
Cities right now is that even the most long term
organizers who've been here for decades can't keep
track of all the resistance that is going on. There are
so many self-organized crews just doing work that in
any conversation with someone from another
neighborhood you might stumble over a whole
collective of people resisting in ways you didn't think
of. There's a crew of carpenters just going around
fixing kicked-in doors. There are tow truck drivers
taking cars of detained people away for free. People
delivering food to families in hiding. So many local
rapid response groups that the number is uncertain
but somewhere between 80 and the low hundreds-
especially when one considers that several
immigrant communities have their own non-English
rapid response networks usually uncounted in the
main English-language directories. People standing

This whole resistance has so many poles of initiative
and leadership, so many layers of self-organization,
