Quebec’s election saw one of the most distorted election results in Canadian history: the PQ won 46% of seats with 28% vote, while the CAQ got zero seats with over 500,000 votes. Read our write-up to see how proportional representation fixes this. www.fairvote.ca/06/10/2026/p...

When Justin Trudeau abandoned electoral reform, he claimed proportional representation breeds extremism. But data shows his preferred winner-take-all model is where extreme factions risk total control, while PR contains them. Read Harmeet Nanner's guest post: www.fairvote.ca/23/07/2026/h...

As @acoyne.bsky.social writes in The Globe and Mail, minority governments often deliver more legitimate, negotiated outcomes. So why do we keep producing false majority governments with less than 40% of the vote? Proportional representation would make cooperation the norm.
Screenshot of a The Globe and Mail opinion article by Andrew Coyne titled “A minority government is best suited to manage Canada in a crisis.” Below the headline is a photo of politicians in the House of Commons, with one speaking and another seated behind him. The visible text argues that majority governments often do not represent a true majority of voters, noting recent governments formed with less than 40% support. It states that minority governments have produced important policy achievements because legislation must be negotiated rather than imposed, leading to more durable, broadly supported outcomes.

Big news in British Columbia! The all party Democratic and Electoral Reform Committee has recommended a Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform after months of hearings. 1/10
Graphic with a dark teal background. At the top, white text reads “BC all party Electoral Reform Committee.” Below it, a yellow box with black text says “recommends a.” Under that, two large yellow rectangles with bold black text read “BC Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform!” Along the bottom of the graphic is an illustrated row of raised hands of various skin tones and clothing colors.

Important piece in @policyoptions.irpp.org where Trevor Potts from @e4dca.bsky.social argues it's time for proportional representation. First-past-the-post weakens our democracy by disadvantaging minority voices and amplifying polarization. It's time to demand change!

First-past-the-post means Canadian politics is built around winning suburban GTA swing ridings. Proportional representation means politics would be built around earning support from every voter, no matter where they live. #cdnpoli

Will Mark Carney do the right thing for Canada?
Our winner-take-all voting system leaves the governing party, elected with 40 per cent support or less, free to ignore ridings in areas where they have little support ― and they usually do.

Congratulations @kayabagaarielle.bsky.social on your new role as Minister of Democratic Institutions! We urge you to make electoral reform a priority—Canada needs proportional representation for a fairer, more representative democracy. #CdnPoli
A black-and-white newspaper clipping features a quote from Pierre Trudeau in 1980: “I would support a system of proportional representation... Rather than using the present system where you can have in the West, 20-30% of the votes and zero members. And conversely, as the Conservative Party has had in Quebec, 8-15% of the vote and zero members. And same for the NDP. I think we have to move in this direction.” The quote highlights Trudeau’s acknowledgment of the flaws in Canada’s first-past-the-post system and the need for electoral reform.

A data visualization graphic titled "Which voters back proportional representation?" shows the results of a national poll conducted by EKOS Research. A large circular chart indicates that 68% of Canadians support proportional representation, while smaller charts display support levels by party: 72% of Liberal voters, 54% of Conservative voters, 83% of NDP voters, 87% of Green voters, 74% of Bloc voters, and 77% of PPC voters. The chart uses green for support, red for opposition, and gray for "don't know." The EKOS logo appears in the bottom left, and the website www.fairvote.ca/prpoll2025 is displayed at the bottom.

A huge shoutout to @mikeschreiner.bsky.social for standing with Fair Vote Canada volunteers in Guelph and accepting our petition for proportional representation and a Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform! It's time for all leaders to step up and pledge to make every vote count!
A group of around 20 people, including Fair Vote Canada volunteers and Ontario Green Party leader Mike Schreiner, pose together in a room with wooden-paneled walls. Mike Schreiner, standing in the center, is holding a petition. Some attendees are wearing winter clothing, while others are dressed casually. A Green Party sign is visible in the background, and a woman in a mustard yellow sweater stands near the right side of the group. A table with a green and white patterned tablecloth is partially visible in the foreground.
