I think the important difference here is that "LANTERNS" raises this 'destiny' story-point specifically to CRITICIZE and, ultimately, dispell it. It's there because it feels the way you do about the concept. The point the story keeps hammering about the Guardians is that they're wrong...

CIA (former), and I get why that connection and what happened on that Wonder Woman book bothers people - I'm certainly no supporter of that. But King WAS part of this project and one of DC's most-established staff prior to this; I don't think him having (apparently?) a good work relationship...

The series was right upfront about the scale/scope of itself from the early episodes, it kept that tone consistent and paid off its secrets/setups fairly. I *also* think it mightve been "fun" if it surprise-flipped into basically STAR WARS for the finale ...but that wasn't "promised" 🤷‍♂️

I understand why a lot of people legitimately didn't like "LANTERNS." It did a lot of things very differently than I think anybody expected, including working in entirely different genre than usual. It makes sense many just wouldn't care for it. I DON'T think it's a "Surf Dracula" situation, though

An important corollary to the Surf Dracula tweet that I think should be talked about more, now that we're basically inundated with these types of shows, is that most of them don't get renewed, but even the ones that are don't turn into the weekly adventures of Surf Dracula in the second season.
