Although 'cordless telephone' usually just referred to a landline handset without a wire, some people like Ron Todd here were using the term to describe mobiles

1953 - Les Paul & Mary Ford - How High The Moon Including the introduction which shows what an amazingly futuristic thing this was in the 50s, hell it sounds like a lost future even now, why didn't more people do this? (Record is 1951 as anyone will know from the most recent mix, but vid is 53)

I started secondary school exactly 50 years ago today. To my delight there was ONE other boy in my class who was into the Beatles, compared to zero in my primary school. Most kids my age (born in 65) were barely aware of the Beatles when we were kids

“Mean To Be Mean” has Swansea Sound sharpening twee-pop into something wonderfully barbed: bright guitars, bruised wit, and melodies sweet enough to conceal the venom. It’s romantic disappointment delivered with impeccable timing and a smirk. youtu.be/A2pLs5yd394?...

Former uk govt official. In 90s worked on policy on promoting physical activity AND reducing accidents. Both sides of this debate were in my ear constantly. Striking that the arguments in have not changed AT ALL in 3 decades and neither has uk policy. Still promote cycling. Still no helmet mandate.

Amazing 1. The riff was the LAST element to be written. 2. If you asked anyone to hum Daytripper it would be the riff. 3. Guitar riffs do not count as part of the songwriting except in exceptional cases. Because of 2 I always counted this among the exceptions but now because of 1 i'm not so sure.

It's quite amazing and revelatory that the riff (THAT riff) was the last element to be written. If you asked someone randomly to hum daytripper it would be the riff!

Agree from experience within gov. Ministers are never comfortable genuinely relinquishing decision making to local bodies or agencies.

Abolishing the GLC and all the other metropolitan authorities made it clear where she stood on devolution. There wasn't even a pretence.

Bob Collins @bobc1965.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Agree. I worked on policy areas that were prime candidates for devolution and localism. Despite Governments from 2010 promising a devolution revolution ministers fought like tigers not to relinquish control of anything.

People seem to be missing the point that under these proposals non-viable pubs *can* be converted to housing, its just that evidence of non-viability is required. I know of pubs that were closed not because they didn't make money but because the owners decided to make *more* money by cashing in.
010
Bob Collins @bobc1965.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
But it looks like this will not offer blanket protection for genuinely unviable pubs. It will simply require evidence of unviability. This is similar to how planning law already works regarding change of use for listed buildings.

I got to know Revolver gradually through the red, then RnR music and Love Songs comps, which between them cover all the Macca tracks plus YS and Taxman. Hence my 'new' Revolver tracks when I got the album were all of John's 5 and 2 George. It took ages before I got a proper handle on it as an album.

In my recent experience in HMG (retired last year) vfm and efficency have been all but completely sacrificed on the altar of very short term affordability constraints.

As someone who has always lived and breathed music, i have to say that there are few things i dislike more than being subjected to unsolicited music in a public place (from phones on a train to restaurants and yes to amplified buskers)

If you described Husker Du to me without me listening to them i'd say they sound like they should probably be in my top 5 favourite bands ever. But no they are not. I don't hate them but they always leave me unmoved.

Paper maps are great. Never run out of juice, let you see the close up detail and the big picture at the same time (because they're three feet wide, unlike your phone), and the more you use them the more you learn your way around without them, unlike obeying a machine.

The Supreme Court haven't ruled on what 'matters'. That's not their job. They have ruled on what the law says and in doing so have found the law to be a mess. The Govt has deliberately chosen not to fix it and instead are acting as if the SC have a policy override on Govt that they must abide by.
