Yes that can happen, but someone else might buy it in the meantime.

In any case, the Court of the Lord Lyon are very helpful and responsive to emails, and can assure you of your rights to the coat of arms etc. If you feel an urge to explore the world of Scots Heraldry further, I'd recommend the Heraldry Society of Scotland. Infodump over 😅

Or for a more fun/less formal approach, a wee flag or shield for your desk, and stickers are great for phones, water bottles, etc. You can get a high quality scan of the arms by emailing the Lyon Court, and also there are lots of digital artists who can make a nice modern rendition if you wanted.

Yes, there are definitely some nice things you can do. If there's any tangible objects that you want to pass to future Astronomers Royal e.g. an ornamental astrolabe (?) then you could have the arms engraved on it. Make some historical objects for the future, perhaps.

In short, yes! Professor John C. Brown had a coat of arms granted by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in 1996 for the Astronomer Royal for Scotland and 'successors in the same', so it goes with the office. www.johncbrown.org/ar_for_s.htm...

@astroroyalscot.bsky.social. Hello Professor Heymans, I am interested in Scottish heraldry and wondered if you make use of, or would ever plan to use, the coat of arms of theAstronomer Royal of Scotland?

I did not win the World Haggis Eating Championships on Saturday, but I did get to eat a pound of free haggis so that's almost like winning (I'm the one in the kilt at one end of the table) www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/5565...

This display of coats of arms and flags could well have been one of the most colourful sights amongst the already incredibly colourful Edinburgh Tartan Parade! A very stirring image from a celebratory occasion.

Maybe a memorial mirror, to give those passing the opportunity for a moment of reflection? (yes it does look war-memorialy)
