When I joined Bluesky last year, alt-text was new to me, and it seemed tedious, and kind of scolding. Since then, I feel it as an act of kindness, care, and inclusion, and it’s become automatic to include descriptions on every image. I hope it becomes like 2nd nature for you too. It feels good.

Hello new Bsky folks! If you've just followed, I'm a historian of medieval Japan working on metal caster networks and documentary forgery. I manage @jppinfo.bsky.social, which helps facilitate greater equity and inclusion in the the Japanese humanities. I also do East Asia + DH and post cat chaos. 🐾
Four images side by side. The first is a photo of a cream tabby named Fox who is making a one-brain-cell face with his eyes wide and mouth hanging open. The second is a medieval Japanese handwritten document with black calligraphy on dark gray recycled paper. The third is a tortie cat named Rigatoni, gazing sadly at the viewer from her Trash Jail (a black mesh trash can turned upside on top of her because she is a naughty demon child). The fourth is an early modern painting of several Japanese metal casters in various states of sweaty dress pouring hot metal into a mold.

Bad news: I wrote to the Museum of Maritime Pets in Maine to ask how cat poops and pee were handled on ships before litter was invented. They didn't know! But they're very curious, too, and want me to keep them updated. We can all make educated guesses but I want to see what actual records say.

Ever heard of ‘Jimi (mundane) Halloween,’ the relatively new Halloween tradition in Japan? I hope you enjoy my bilingual article! 地味ハロウィンについて日英で書いてます。読んでね! www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2023/10...

Why deal with the crowds when you can have a ‘mundane Halloween’ online?
People are busy thinking up costumes at Halloween, so will yours be flashy and outrageous? Well, an online trend proves 'bland' can be just as fun.

Happy #ToriiTuesday! Today's #torii are CONCRETE. Specifically, ferroconcrete! ⛩️🏢 It might not be flashy, but at one point it was a symbol of Shinto modernity! (Sadly this concrete giant at Hakozakigū 筥崎宮 in Fukuoka, built in 1930, was demolished in 2018.) 🧵 #AsianStudies
