You all may enjoy me earning some brian damage. I believe Andy Kong punched an entire language out of my head during my boxing debut. (I thought it would be funny to be a boxing rare book librarian, and I did about as well as the title implies)

Reorganizing universities according to neoliberal notions of profit will impoverish untold numbers of people. The freedom to think, read, and learn is globally under seige - from AI to our own university admins. "Practicality" is a cowardly discourse.

I do think being a librarian has made me more realistic about the intelligence of many faculty, as I hear people say things like, "I am not sure that 15th and 16th Italian printing has any direct relationship to the history of Latin literature."

I think, 25 years later, my view is that 9/11 ultimately did knock down American empire. It gave popular permission for American's to reengage brutal racist practices, lean into Christo-Fascism, and over the long term, seems to have made the world a very different place.

Every year I think, "there is no possible way our campus finance and payment systems could get more insane and convoluted." Every year, I am wrong. It is now so much work to spend, that it feels like it would be more efficient to manually count out pennies and mail them to rare book dealers

You are never, ever required to maintain a relationship with someone who abuses you. If anyone reading this is struggling with this feeling today or any day, you deserve to be loved as you are. It's ok to cease relationships with people who hurt and disrespect you, even if those people are parents.

RIP to the mighty Robert Gore, the UCLA Arts Librarian. Robert knew everything about every artist book at UCLA. Robert was always such joy and light and seriousness. Feel so lucky that I managed to convince him to read his poetry in a bar last May. He was the best of what it meant to be a librarian.

Ok Bluesky. I am planning on buying this for UCLA, but neither the dealer nor I have ever seen one. Probably circa 1780s, prints are from a 1730s series. You spin the knows and the picture scrolls through narratives of the old testament. Anyone seen one before? Know what they are called?
