7/31: Warlock (1989) - a borderline family movie, if you ask me. Got some strong Hocus Pocus vibes.

forgot to post last night's watch: 6/31 Final Destination (2000) - a percectly serviceable teen horror flick, but maybe not worth the 26 year wait to watch it

5/31: Hokum (2026) - I almost had to turn it off to continue watching tomorrow morning

Brendan McKnight @bmcknight.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

4/31: Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) - Susan Tyrell's unhinged performance is pretty much the only thing going here. I can't remember why I'd been meaning to watch this for so long. Going to get out of the 80s tomorrow.

Movie 2/31, Evil Dead Burn (2026). I wanted to like this one more than I actually did. It's grisly, gory, and downright mean-spirited, as you'd expect, but lacks the humour of the movies that came before it.

Going to try my usual 31 scary movies in 31 scary days, started yesterday with a rewatch of Pumpkinhead boxd.it/XHqBq

Movie poster for Pumpkinhead (1988).
The tagline at the top in red letters reads "A Grim Fairy Tale."
A large photo of Pumpkinhead's claw reaching down from above, about to carve into Maggie's (Kerry Remsen) forehead makes up the majority of the poster.
The title and credits are in the lower fifth of the poster.

So much of the lens on culture has been turned into a numbers game, where everything is about chart placements and streaming numbers and data. Its a horse race to who gets to do data best, and all of these dorks forget that people just want a song that will make them cry at the grocery store.

For your consideration: My great-grandfather's name is Miner F. Felch. The last name alone is *something*, but it gets better. He was in the army, and achieved the rank of Major. Major Miner.

Screenshot of a newspaper scan from The Evening Star (Washington, D.C.), May 11, 1930 which reads:

"Maj. and Mrs. Luther Moore of Silver Spring were hosts Tuesday evening to a group of their Army friends. In their home on Sligo avenue. A Chinese supper was served, followed by a bridge game. The guests were Col. and Mrs. George Martin Edwards, Maj. and Mrs. Miner F. Felch, Maj. and Mrs. James E. Ash, Maj. and Mrs. Frank D. Francis, Maj. and Mrs. J. R. Hudnall, Maj. and Mrs. W. H. Siefert."

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

Nichole Hiltz
The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.

@treewarrior.bsky....
maybe because defending everything about a super small minority of the population is not worth losing to fascists

found a mirror at the National Gallery today

it wasn't actually a mirror, guys, it was a painting. From the National Gallery listing:

MASTER OF ST. AUGUSTINE UNKNOWN
PORTRAIT OF A MAN

late 15th century

Category:
European and American Painting, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts

This portrait is usually kept in storage. His expression is dour, and the likeness is not flattering, yet these qualities implied his rejection of vanity. Purchased as French, it was later thought to be Flemish. Aspects such as the man’s cloak are unusual, and the work is difficult to place. Some have even doubted the date, but technical evidence confirms it. This modest work represents the large body of paintings that are now generally excluded from museum collections or which no longer survive.

I didn't know much about Dolly Parton when I was a kid except that she was in a movie with Lily Tomlin. Later on, I thought that the virtually unanimous love for her was some kind of ironic put-on. Then I listened to the music and learned just how *good* a person she was, and I finally got it. RIP
