reading through the "Eras Yuri Anthology" (go read it! it's really good and short! also the rest of this too is a spoiler for the second story!) and wow "One Piece of Youth" hit so fucking hard, it is really bittersweet and weirdly, uh, optimistic, i guess?

what a city to live in :)

a photo of a small, lush/green mountain with clouds surrounding its middle heights (i.e. the peak and base are still visible). in the foreground, in the lower third, are a few apartment buildings, trees, and street lights. the mountain is clearly very close to the rest of the city.

a photo of a small valley (with the surrounding mountains visible), kissed by big and small sun spots piercing through a blanket of clouds; the cloudy sky is visible in the upper third of the image, while the valley takes up the middle third. buildings and trees interleave in the background of the lower third, and an empty road and some street signs and lighting fill its foreground.

a photo of clouds (beautifully) stretching across a mountain range in the background, sandwiched between a very cloudy sky above, and a football field, buildings, trees, and some antennas in the foreground.

btw, here's some cool old-timey diagrams and pictures from a book titled "Mission hydro-électriques Française en URSS, 22 mai - 5 juin 1962" ("French hydro-electric mission in the USSR, May 22nd - June 5th 1962")

A graph of total electricity production in the USSR, the US, France, and (as an aggregate) countries in the ECSC (european coal and steel community). It has a few nice though clearly handwritten notes, and has a nice hand-drawn red logarithmic grid as a background, but it is somewhat hard to read because of the 3 (three!) different axes, hard-to-differentiate lines, weird data points, and overall over-crowdedness.

A photo of the construction of the Bratsk hydroelectric dam. It's a little blurry and is generally hard to parse thanks to the various construction tools and materials everywhere, though the gigantic scale of the whole operation is hard to miss.

A two-page spread of a diagram of the Volgograd hydro-electric power station, as a vertical slice along the axis of the road above it. It shows a relatively small portion of it, but even as geometric and industrial as it is, it is beautifully shaded, depicts a classic socialist mural as decoration for the dam, shows a few buses using the dam's road, and has a nice square office building as background, with a clock face on it. Of course, it also shows, in silhouettes, the various pumps, engines, and turbines.
