Gangs of New York was mostly a weird misfire of a movie but the final shot, where the city fades into the modern skyline and you instantly understand that everything the protagonists fought over has been quietly erased by the passage of time is for my money Scorsese’s finest moment.

The city needs get out of the business of being a landlord to the city’s grocery wholesalers, since it’s clearly very bad at it. Stevie's run from 1970 (Signed, Sealed & Delivered) through 1976 (Songs in the Key of Life) is just awe inspiring. Most artists would sell their souls and their parents' souls to have made just _one_ of those albums. Imagine releasing seven albums and having Innervisions _not_ be obviously the best.

This is the stuff that scares me. The paperclip maximizer is a fantasy. Simple economics are going to force people to fix the power consumption issues. But "if you tune a model just right it becomes a stochastic terrorism generator" is now a _known fact_. Someone, somewhere is iterating on it.
