My current favorite example of this is the kid who plays Dr. Ogilve on The Pitt. The costumers and makeup artists have gone to _incredible_ lengths to make him look awkward and offputting. In real life he looks like this.

Yeah, most muppets couldn’t actually pick anything up: you’d have to stop the shot, potentially swap out puppets, stitch whatever it was to their hands and start again. Fine for Kermit, but not gonna fly for a character that has to fling cookware around. Bork Bork Bork!

Five-Spice Duck Breast with Blackberries
Total Time: 1 hr 10 min Servings: 4 to 6 servings Source: cooking.nytimes.com
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
2 Muscovy duck breasts, about 1 pound
each
Salt
Trim duck breasts as necessary, removing extraneous fat
or gristle. Score the skin side of the breast diagonally
with a sharp knife.
2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
2 garlic cloves, smashed or diced
1 shallot, finely diced
2 tablespoons good sherry vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
6 ounces blackberries
Season both sides of the duck breasts with salt, then
sprinkle both sides evenly with five-spice powder. Mix
together ginger and garlic and use it to slather the
breasts. Cover and let marinate for 30 minutes at room
temperature. (Alternatively, wrap and refrigerate for
several hours, or even overnight; bring back to room
temperature before cooking.)
½ cup rich chicken broth
Place a cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. When pan
is hot, lay duck breast in it skin-side down. Let sizzle
gently for 7 minutes, until skin is crisp and golden,
adjusting heat as necessary to keep from getting too dark
too quickly. Turn breast over and cook 3 to 5 minutes
more. An instant-read thermometer should register 125
degrees for medium rare. Remove from pan and let rest
for 10 minutes on a warm plate. Drain fat from pan
(reserve for another use if you wish).
Make the sauce: Over medium heat, add shallots to
same pan and cook until softened, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Add sherry vinegar, brown sugar and half the
blackberries, stirring until sugar is dissolved and berries
have released their juice. Add chicken broth, raise heat
and simmer rapidly until liquid is reduced by half and a bit
syrupy. Strain the contents of the skillet into a small
saucepan and keep warm.
To serve, slice duck breast thinly across the grain on a
diagonal and arrange on a platter. Spoon the sauce over
the meat and garnish with the rest of the blackberries.

I've been trying to make literally everyone I know read idlewords.com/talks/superi... in hopes of immunizing them in advance against this particular mental virus. I don't think this has been, on a societal level, very successful.
[Image of a room full of people all wearing mickey mouse masks]

When you're evaluating persuasive arguments about something strange, there are two perspectives you can choose, the inside one or the outside one.

Say that some people show up at your front door one day wearing funny robes, asking you if you will join their movement. They believe that a UFO is going to visit Earth two years from now, and it is our task to prepare humanity for the Great Upbeaming.

The inside view requires you to engage with these arguments on their merits. You ask your visitors how they learned about the UFO, why they think it's coming to get us—all the normal questions a skeptic would ask in this situation.

Imagine you talk to them for an hour, and come away utterly persuaded. They make an ironclad case that the UFO is coming, that humanity needs to be prepared, and you have never believed something as hard in your life as you now believe in the importance of preparing humanity for this great event.

[Image of five creepily identical-looking children with platinum blonde hair and glowing red eyes]

But the outside view tells you something different. These people are wearing funny robes and beads, they live in a remote compound, and they speak in unison in a really creepy way. Even though their arguments are irrefutable, everything in your experience tells you you're dealing with a cult.

Of course, they have a brilliant argument for why you should ignore those instincts, but that's the inside view talking.

The outside view doesn't care about content, it sees the form and the context, and it doesn't look good.

Yeah. I think people remember it primarily because of AM's rant in the middle, and fair enough: it's a stunning piece of writing. But the story around it is an absolute mess, and IMO kind of a greatest-misses collection of a lot of Ellison's worst tendencies as a writer.
A desktop decoration in the shape of an obelisk with the "hate rant" from Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" printed on it. We all know the words, right? Okay find, everyone sing along:

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD 'HATE' WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT. FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.

I swear to god Masayoshi Son has for the last twenty years been searching for the deal that could finally torch the entire world’s economy and I’m starting to get a little worried that he finally found it.
In a typical margin loan tied to publicly traded stock, a borrower needs to pump more cash into the deal if the stock price falls below a certain level-otherwise the lender can seize the shares. OpenAl's shares aren't publicly traded, making it harder to determine how its valuation is changing. Still, SoftBank said the deal does require it to inject additional cash if its valuation falls.
"Borrowing against OpenAl to buy more OpenAl" is a decent description of the global economy right now. If OpenAl's valuation collapses, then the banks that gave SoftBank this margin loan will be in bad trouble, but so will all the other banks. Might as well also do the margin loan.

I helped identify the "Toynbee Idea in Kubrick's 2001 Resurrect Dead on Planet Jupiter" tile-maker.
A so-called "toynbee tile" -- a multi-colored tile made of some thick plastic-like material adhered to the asphalt of a city street. Crude mosaic-style letters read "TOYNBEE IDEA IN KUBRICK'S 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPITER"

If you're of a certain age and grew up in any major east coast city (but especially Philadelphia) you probably remember these.

An image of a young woman in black jeans and t-shirt standing next to a Thinking Machine CM-1, a circa 1986 "supercomputer". The CM-1 is neck and neck with the Cray X-MP for the title of coolest-looking computer ever: it looks like eight black cubes stacked 4x4, and the front of each cube is densely covered with two grids of red LEDs representing system state. This is what an impressive computer was _supposed_ to look like.
