Adam has been consistent in warning & educating the public on topics like this. But as with all mainstream outlets, the Atlantic like to “both-sides” everything.

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
In other professors’ syllabi, the bot flagged the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, essays by the Mexican American MacArthur genius grant recipient Sandra Cisneros, and materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people).

Putting aside the ideological slant of the new rules, the bot, like many large language models, seems to “hallucinate,” or make mistakes. The AAUP lawsuit lists texts banned for their “sex-based ecofeminist framework” and “gendered ecofeminist frameworks.” These phrases might sound persuasively like academese, but the academics behind the lawsuit had never heard of them; these concepts “do not exist,” the complaint says. Matthew Pehl, a history professor at Tech, told me that he knew several people who’d received reports from the system that were “plainly written by an AI that had hallucinated content or confused content from one class to another.”

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.

There’s some missing context in the original post, but I think his post can be read as showing how important Black voters are to Dems chances of having a great night rather than blaming Black voters for Harris losing in 2024.

Basically SCOTUS/Kavanaugh rejected a request to overturn the Missouri SC decision stating the 2022 maps must be used. A district court, a few minutes later, said the new 2025 gerrymandered maps can be used and this current ruling leaves in place the 2025 maps (for now at least).

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.

I think that’s what the supporters of the far-right misunderstand. The world they want to build is an unsustainable one that will crumble again. But leaders who still believe in liberalism really need to work on improving people’s lives. Otherwise, we’ll continue to see more of this.

Anarchism is not pipe dreams of an impossible utopia. It's simple. Without the state, society organizes collective agreements for wellbeing governed by no law or ruler but organic out of human nature, & human evil will still exist, but there's way more now. @impswrld.xyz @161bklyn.myatproto.social

I'll again note that the folks willing to sign a letter supporting a raging eugenicist (purportedly in defense of his academic freedom to be racist) aren't nearly as motivated when it comes to *actual* threats to academic freedom, like this.

3. I think framing his suspension and potential firing around ideology/academic freedom only reinforces the bad-faith that we see from his supporters and signers of that letter. Even the Trump administration is defending him on those grounds.

1. Apparently he was hired by one professor sympathetic to his work. 2. While I understand the point of not firing someone over ideological reasons, the letter started that the school had received complaints about him and that he wasn’t doing the work he was hired to do - amongst other reasons.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if you are signing a letter supporting a disgraced eugenicist famous for hounding a Black scholar to death your main concern is not academic freedom. This goes double if you don’t have the same smoke for the Trump administration’s attacks on academia.
