Writers used to be able to live comfortably off the sale of a short story or two a month. Authors like Terry Pratchett made enough money selling silly fantasy books in the 80's that they quit their day jobs. That doesn't happen any more.

Here's a take: Pentious's arc falls in line with the famous Spider-Man motto "With Great Power comes Great Responsibility". He had the power to bring a killer to justice but out of fear for self-preservation he did nothing, his redemption came when he used the power he did have to protect others.
