What VAR tells us about AI
FIFA's semi-automated refereeing system promises neutrality but brims with bias. It's widely despised yet embraced by elites. It is, in other words, a lot like AI.

the internet has lost *legibility of effort* - the ability to easily whether something took meaningful human work It's why we all catalogue vibe-code tells. And I bet that we'll find new ways to show our humanity through our work eieio.games/blog/legibil...
Screenshot of blog post. Full text:

So:

Lots of work is easier because of LLMs, and
Lots of heuristics we used to gauge effort are broken because of LLMs, so
Conveying effort to others is harder because of LLMs
And:

“Someone spent time on this” is a proxy for “this is worth engaging with” and
I appreciate projects that take a lot of effort and
I like it when people appreciate that I spent effort on something
But also:

Making a good thing still requires making lots of decisions, and
Making lots of decisions is still very hard, despite LLMs, so
Making good things is still very hard
As a creative technologist I’ve found this paralyzing. And as someone who loves novel internet projects I’ve found it frustrating. I’ve heard similar things from many of my friends.

What software (and writing, to an extent) is missing now is legibility of effort - the ability to tell at a glance whether something took a human meaningful work.

it's unbelievable to me that someone could actually be a trillionaire. i think most of us have trouble internalizing how much money that truly is. let me put it in simple terms for you: a trillion dollars is three million dollars

Jeez, I feel like such an imposter

The studio behind it says they 'hardly slept' for several weeks while writing AI prompts and refining the shots — 'AI didn't make this film. We did'

I still feel like an imposter but at least I'm not a fucking loser

demonschool credits all 145 people who touched the game over the course of its multi-year dev cycle AND explains what exactly they contributed. the rest of the games industry, which commonly omits people from credits entirely, should be taking notes
“We worked [on Hyper Gunsport] with a localization company that refused to give the names of the people that actually did the work; they just wanted to have their company name in there,” Sheffield said. “They say they do that because ‘It's the standard’ and ‘to avoid poaching’ or whatever, but I hate that and think it's total BS. … I've also seen a lot of folks complain about how they weren't credited on a game because they'd left the studio before the game they worked on was finished. And indeed, our lead 3D artist left two years ago. But he's still the first artist credited because he set the style and visual tone for a lot of the game. Not working on the game to the very end doesn't negate the work he did.”

The more Sheffield thought about how to meet the needs of so many different types of contributors – and discussed the matter on social media – the more a comprehensive, detail-oriented approach to crediting started to make sense.

“That had all been percolating in the back of my mind as we got close to finishing, and then it just sort of hit me as it came time for me to write the credits,” he said. “I discussed this approach with the team and everyone was fine with it, so we just went for it. We always want to credit everyone that touched the game, so even though the core team was 7 or 8 people at any given time, we credited around 145 people in Demonschool. Who cares if it's a lot of people? Who cares if it's long? They all did something and they deserve credit. And you basically can tell who the core team was by reading the descriptions. None of us are precious about that anyway.”

Microsoft never should have been allowed to acquire Bethesda and Activision-Blizzard-King, it should have been blocked for the clear monopoly making move it was, and anyone with pattern recognition could've seen this coming, because voraciously acquisition always comes with mass layoffs.

people say making works with AI is “lazy” and that art is “hard work” but that misses the point to me, that pleasure to an artist is the fixation itself, and a finished work is waste product

Nobody is expecting you to pay for EVERY website, that's not practical. But thinking of these sites as magazines is maybe a better way of framing it than "oh great now i gotta pay for websites", with the added bonus all the money goes to us and not a publisher.

Please support worker-owned media. Doesn't have to be us, just...someone. Anyone. We started aftermath because we felt it was the only way to make this work going forward, as did everyone else at all these sites, and the more people paying for our/their work, the bigger and better we'll get.

Happy May 1st. The value of your labor belongs to you and the actions of the state are best understood as as a coordinated effort to distract you from this. The state fears an organized and unified proletariat like it fears death and rightly so. Power to the workers and power to the people

Bird photography tips, an oldie that is hopefully useful for spring migration right now.
A comic called Bird Photography tips. A good bird photo shows a cape may warbler perched on a branch, with excellent lighting, subject in focus, and field marks clearly visible. A great bird photo shows the warbler in mid hop, labeled with peerless athleticism, levitation??, powerful. An excellent bird photo shows a little round warbler facing the camera, labeled borb, round, and a good bird. An exceptional bird photo shows the bird zooming forward mid flight, labeled nyooooom.
