My high school best friend slash college roommate just texted me to tell me his future son-in-law will be at my marriage green card seminar at BYU-Idaho tomorrow. (His daughter would also be there except she has a class.) Currently feeling my age (old).

Three shows that absolutely should have been in the top 100 (heck, in the top 10) TV shows of the 2000s. NYT screwed up. 1. Fargo 2. Firefly 3. Arcane

I didn't care about pop music when I was a teenager in the 90's. We didn't have Spotify--or any form of music from the internet at all--and I still found plenty of classic rock, prog rock, and prog metal to make me happy. Why in the world would I care about pop music now?

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Jim Risch put out a mailer touting his work "DEFENDING IDAHO'S PUBLIC LANDS." How? By stopping a large wind energy project (eye roll). Had it been a strip mine instead I doubt he would have cared.

Myself and other immigration attorneys have noticed that the government has paused most citizenship applications that have already been approved and are only waiting for a swearing-in-ceremony. Our guess is that they're intentionally delaying these until after the mid-term election.

Asked to speak on Sunday on whatever topic I wish, but encouraged to use a specific talk in preparation. The talk: "We congratulate those bishoprics who are eliminating announcements that detract from the spirit of our worship." Me: um.... (And yes, I'll find a way to sneak that in.)

Report: Bishopric didn't seem thrilled about reading the letter. A brave woman stood up and walked out, her 5 kids behind her.

Am I the only one who liked the Supergirl movie more than the latest Superman movie? Give a good kid a nice upbringing and even with every super power imaginable he's just boring. Male version of a Mary Sue. Makes for a nice person in real life but a boring character for a movie.

Edible bands? I started a list but they were almost all animals (Camel, Fish, Wolverine, Pavlov's Dog) and I started getting grossed out. The non-animal one? Black Noodle Project--highly recommended for Pink Floyd fans.

Oddest job: either feeding tadpoles (fun but pretty dull except for the one time I ran away from a skunk) or hooking up people to a bunch of wires--including one that went down their nose and into their throat!--and watching their brain waves etc. on a screen while they slept.

It's happening way too frequently--I've prepped a case, it's ready to send out to USCIS (via FedEx because online filing is either unreliable or not a possibility) and DHS announces new "guidance" (or in this case sends out private letters which others then announce) which change everything.

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

My youngest is entering the 7th grade today. We moved to the next town over a couple of weeks ago--to a much better and bigger school district. Fortunately he has a cousin at the school, and one of our new neighbors has a couple classes with him and rides the bus with him.

The wife's usually not pleased when I buy Lego sets, but she's excited for the new big X-Files set. With new releases they sometimes offer a smaller "gift with purchase" for the first few days of availability--so my lab-working wife will also be getting a surprise Scully-in-the-lab mini set.

Spent most of yesterday telling a bunch of my clients to avoid airports because even though many of them were in legal status before they filed for a green card, the government's taking so long to process their green cards that they've fallen out of legal status.

Lindsey Graham's soul died 10 years ago, when he went from a friend of John McCain and an enemy of Trump to a MAGA lickspittle. Personally I think Trump had Kompromat on him--probably fairly inconsequential stuff that would have still cost him his senate seat. May he get everything he deserves.

Guy in church is wearing a red tie with a thick blue X. The X has white stars in it. Not sure if he mistakenly thinks it's patriotic because it has elements of the USA flag or if he knows it's the Confederate flag.

PATRIA

You do not love her less when her skirts are torn,
Her standard bloody, dragged in the mud,
Her ankles fettered, chafed, her eyes cast down,
Her ghoulish captors dancing in her defeat;

This is the time, instead, to love her more,
With all the fervency of desperate hope,
Which sees, beyond the black horizon, fire
That may be battle, or the burst of dawn.

Idaho Falls 2026 dining awards and my takes on them: 1. Best Burger. Blue Wave somehow got #1 and they're mediocre. I haven't tried Burly Burger, but Sully's Gastro Pub (ranked #3) is incredible and deserves the #1 spot. 2. Best Diner: Dixie's Diner. Agreed.

Anyone remember those Magic Eye pictures? They were popular when I was in middle school, and I hated them. As hard as I tried, I could never see the secret image. I was reminded of them today and I decided to look up why I always struggled--and I found out it's because I have amblyopia.

Trying to temporarily ignore today's Supreme Court decisions, but the absolute blindness of the majority when it comes to very blatant racism is just astounding. Trump literally says Haitians are poisoning the blood of the American people and 6 justices claim they can't see the racism.

Several months ago an employee quit and set up her own "immigration services" company, giving legal advice even though she's not an attorney. She marketed her services to some of my clients at discounted prices. She's a hard worker but she also has an over-inflated sense of her own expertise.

The red state, blue state divide is real. But it's driven by more than just politics
Recent research suggests there's more going on with "ideological sorting" than simply moving to places that match one's politics. It's often one of many deciding factors, such as taxes or safety.
