Yeah, any time anyone gets special treatment like that in small town Idaho high schools you can be sure they're a "valued" athlete. Pretty sure the kids that dressed up in black face for a school assembly in Shelley (back when I lived there) were athletes too.

The administration is too busy worshipping their God, which is high school football.

Sorry you're dealing with dumb medical costs. When wondering who to trust, it's never the insurance company.

Are there First Amendment implications? Maybe, but I'd argue that machines don't have constitutional rights.

Is it AI art? Prominent disclosure of that fact. AI music? Same. AI robot you're talking to for customer service? Yep. Article written by AI? Definitely.

You know how google tells you that the annoying summary it posts at the top of google searches is AI? I firmly believe it should be a requirement that ALL forms of speech that are AI prominently tell you so.

Yeah, I was way too sheltered to have seen Aliens as a teen let alone a young teen and I have no idea how I would have reacted to it back then.

but many years later the friend I watched it with told me it gave him nightmares all that summer). I'm not a big fan of the horror genre but I don't recall ever seeing anything that was truly age-inappropriate as a child and certainly nothing that gave me bad dreams.

Granted, I didn't see a ton of movies in my childhood, but I saw some friends were impacted by that didn't bother me. Arachnophobia when I was about 11 at a sleepover (not terribly scary to me although a friend had nightmares). Fire in the Sky at the end of 7th grade (not terribly scary to me...

Always sad (but in this case unsurprising) when our hopes get dashed.

Pink Floyd! I've also got a few bands I should have discovered way sooner.

Made a smoothy this morning with three old bananas, fruit yogurt, and whole milk. It's either that or they go to waste.

I have that one too! Pretty sure I bought it from BMG when I was in high school in the '90s. I like Tom Petty but I was never a big enough fan to get anything else. A buddy owned Wildflowers and I just wasn't that into it.

Yeah, some of the newer stuff is pretty good but imo it lacks the emotion and brilliance of the early stuff.

Yeah, their first EP and their first 5 albums are all fantastic.

9 that shaped me: Billy Joel GH (2 CD), Styx GH I & 2, Rush Counterparts (2 CD GH), Queensryche's Empire, Dream Theater's Images and Words, Savatage's 4 best--Dead Winter Dead, Wake of Magellan, Streets, and Handful of Rain.

Tim @bio-tim.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And of course that's changed now--I own all the Rush studio albums, the good Styx albums, etc. But back in the pre-internet-music day when you liked a band you typically started with a GH (if possible) and went from there.

I have a confession. The 9 albums that shaped me include a lot of greatest hits albums. The progressive metal stuff I liked (Queensryche, Savatage, etc.) didn't have greatest hits albums at the time, but Rush, Styx, Billy Joel, etc. did--and that was my introduction to their music.

Really impressed by that top line. Queensryche and Rush are my favorite 80s bands (although I prefer to call them progressive rock/metal instead of hair...)

"Infopass appointment" is a secret password to get to a live person on the phone. My clients and I don't want to drive 10 hours round-trip for an infopass appointment to try to fix a mistake USCIS made. We want it handled over the phone.

With the number of international visitors that come for conference, partnering with DHS right now is a CHOICE.

Of the examples they give, there are in fact heroes in The Wire and Game of Thrones (book, but I'm assuming also the show). Of the type that try to stay good despite everything. But also, if I don't like any of the characters it's not worth my time. And I don't like antiheroes.

i think cox should spend less time weeping about polarization and more time working to convince his co-partisans not to abandon pluralism and liberal democracy

Numbers at my green card seminar yesterday were twice as big as normal. Even with the reduction in international students. The kids are concerned, as they should be.

My high school best friend slash college roommate just texted me to tell me his future son-in-law will be at my marriage green card seminar at BYU-Idaho tomorrow. (His daughter would also be there except she has a class.) Currently feeling my age (old).

I've long thought if they set up shop in every town in Eastern Idaho that had a Broulim's they'd drive Broulim's out of business. They'd do really well out here.

Arcane didn't get a lot of attention but everyone I know who saw it was blown away by it. I'm quite surprised they didn't include Fargo on their list as it seems like the kind of show that would fit in with some of the others listed and it's excellent.

Three shows that absolutely should have been in the top 100 (heck, in the top 10) TV shows of the 2000s. NYT screwed up. 1. Fargo 2. Firefly 3. Arcane

I don't like Mad Men or Breaking Bad either. We live in the great age of being able to enjoy the media we like because most of it's available online. Enjoy what you like and ignore the rest.

I didn't care about pop music when I was a teenager in the 90's. We didn't have Spotify--or any form of music from the internet at all--and I still found plenty of classic rock, prog rock, and prog metal to make me happy. Why in the world would I care about pop music now?

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Jim Risch put out a mailer touting his work "DEFENDING IDAHO'S PUBLIC LANDS." How? By stopping a large wind energy project (eye roll). Had it been a strip mine instead I doubt he would have cared.

Fewer new US citizens voting may impact close elections in obvious ways, particularly when one of the parties is stridently anti-immigrant.

Myself and other immigration attorneys have noticed that the government has paused most citizenship applications that have already been approved and are only waiting for a swearing-in-ceremony. Our guess is that they're intentionally delaying these until after the mid-term election.

Asked to speak on Sunday on whatever topic I wish, but encouraged to use a specific talk in preparation. The talk: "We congratulate those bishoprics who are eliminating announcements that detract from the spirit of our worship." Me: um.... (And yes, I'll find a way to sneak that in.)

The next step is $4.99 but only if paying with cash. That's how they're handling it here in Idaho...
