Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 8h..and dopamine hits you for stumbling across a Daedric ruin nobody asked you to even look for, that then provides a lore book quietly discrediting the presiding god emperor as a murderous bastard. Makes me sad how far Bethesda has fallen. 20 years later Morrowind still puts sequels to shame. 010
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 8hIt also makes me realise how much I've come to hate how "here's your next little dopamine hit" a lot of modern games are, and despite being "open world" are entirely linear in your spatial approach. Morrowind really asks you to look at the world, and in doing so you explore beyond the story.. 120
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 8hFor those who don't know Morrowind predates the concept of quest markers, but is a hugely open world map. What this leads to is exploration being foundational to the experience, not just a chore of following a HUD marker. Even the janky "head toward Pelagiad and turn left when you see a lake" 110
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 8hSo I'm replaying Morrowind ATM (one of the classics of my teens) with OpenMW and absolutely loving it. It cleans up a lot of the annoying jank and leaves all the good jank. But the interesting part is how much I love the much maligned Journal!... 110

Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Core just needs to support tooling for better terrain systems. Streaming textures, GPU meshes and the like... Both of which otw I believe? 000
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 13/10/2026And if existing plugins on asset store aren't quite right for you, that really just shows why. It's incredibly subjective and varies almost per game. 110
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 13/10/2026The problem is there's a million different ways todo terrain. Chunked or non chunke static meshes, heightmaps, marching cubes etc. etc. and that's before you even consider is the terrain 'flat', or 'spherical', or some other shape. Catering to all of the above should not be core.... 120

Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 05/10/2026All I need to do is calculate the baseline based on the Level Editor's validator (which does not need to show the side bar) then add say ~10% variance for a 'gold' pass, and ~30%~ for a Silver, everything else is bronze. 000
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 05/10/2026For a long time I've stuck on how to 'score' a Sand Stack puzzle. The whole point is to be relaxing, so time to completion never sat right. Then it dawned on me to just score it as path efficiency relative to a baseline. What better way to show it than to show the amount of sand used! 100
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Cloners copy ideas, which none of these protect. What can you actually do? Not much. Keep dated commits/poc as proof of ownership. Send DMCA takedowns if they copy your art or code, and build things a clone can't copy. Namely a community around your game.... Easier said than done 😔 131
Beau Seymour ~ Sand Stack Dev @bimbam-tm.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Copyright exists the moment you make the work, so registering it only matters if you're in the US and plan to sue. Trademark covers your name, not your game, so it won't stop a clone with a different title. Mechanics are rarely patentable, so a $65 provisional is mostly wasted money. 131
