Before the Noise: Tuesday = Beauty. Irish writer, poet, and artist @daraghfleming says this is his most requested poem — and when you listen, you’ll understand why.It is fierce and tender all at once. These are just a few lines:“If I ever have girls, they’ll be feared by weak men…”“They’ll be gentle and kind while breaking every glass ceiling…”“They’ll take up space and like what they like. They won’t be taught to reduce themselves or hide…”😭😭😭Art that tells the truth. Art that raises the bar. Art that imagines a braver, more beautiful world.Let this one settle in. A favourite and photogenic subject this week #SundayPix #SundayPixSolitude I love writing Alt text, do you?
This white-on-blue cloudscape of the Lea Valley is reflected in the surface of a wide lake stretching across to a dark tree- and shrub-lined bank, which divides the frame a little below halfway. But various textures of rippling disrupt the reflected image.A honey-gold sunrise through the distant treeline sets thin cloud cover aglow above a green field. We view this through thin, silhouetted seed-heads and twigs of foreground shrubs and wildflowers. At the base of the frame is a rustic wood fence, rising slightly from right to left.A vertical view of a seemingly impossible variety of white clouds in a blue sky, lit from just out of frame to the right by the early evening sun.In monochrome, a path slanting slightly from right down to left divides a minimalist frame of two-thirds grass to the bottom foreground, from bright, barely rippled water to the top. A dead straight path parallels the divide. A quarter of the way in from the left of the frame, standing out from the white of the water, is the jet black form of an orthodox Jewish gentleman on the lake bank, head slightly bowed, shoulders dropped, in profile facing our left, as if in contemplation. He is flanked by tiny floating ducks, one on each side, both facing right.

My niece’s cat, Olive, as a fuzzy kitten, and a goose family #SundayPix #SundayPixFuzzy
Close-up of a chocolate coloured kitten’s face. She has subtle stripes of lighter and darker fur above her wide, round eyes. She is looking just to the viewer’s right, calm but alert, her chin on a white fabric surface.A cute little near-black kitten faces us. She is wearing a red collar and is wedged, but not uncomfortably, between a white sofa cushion and a white wall. Behind her is a large green house plant.A chaos of yellow-grey fuzzy goslings graze on short, wild grass while their parents, greylag geese with orange bills, oversee their goings-on and scan the area for threats. They are all very comfortable indeed in the photographer’s presence - not to mention ‘personal space.’ Green summer trees and a pale sky provide the background.

Swindon's "magic roundabout" road junction - 5 mini-roundabouts rotating clockwise connected by a pentagon of roads. To navigate it you need a degree in transcendental geometry and fourth-dimensional topologies.

Dim baiting: accounts that act stupid to lure your correction. Examples. ‘My pic shows this was offside’ with a pic showing it wasn’t. ‘Why’s there a New Zealand when there’s no old Zealand?’ Asking atheists about basic arithmetic or science. We fall for it when we stereotype people, sadly.

Well, that was a fucking ride.
A cropped screenshot of an article section titled "Gary Larson cartoon incident" from a Tumblr page. The text describes a controversy involving a Far Side cartoon and Jane Goodall.

_____________

Gary Larson cartoon incident

_____________

In 1987 Gary Larson published a Far Side cartoon of two chimpanzees grooming, in which one discovers a blonde hair and says, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?"[127] The Jane Goodall Institute called the cartoon an "atrocity" in a letter drafted by its lawyers to Larson and his syndicate. Goodall, who was in Africa at the time, later found the cartoon amusing.[128]

She went on to name it her favourite depiction of herself in pop culture.[129] Larson offered profits from sales of a shirt featuring the cartoon to the Jane Goodall Institute.[130]

Goodall wrote the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy.[131] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals.

In 1988 Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania.[128] While there, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.[127][132]

A square garden roughly 4 metres on each side. Taken from one corner looking towards the door only just in view, along the narrow path. The whole of the rest of the garden is just ceramic objets of every description apparently randomly arranged. They completely cover the ground. In the foreground an angle of rough wooden fencing is in view.

#SundayPix #SundayPixWater Eltham Palace, Rib Valley, a grey wagtail in Barnet, and a Walthamstow Wetlands great crested grebe.
An old arch bridge in yellow and red brick over a reflecting moat in full sun contrasts with trees and grass in foreground shade to the viewer’s right. In front of the bridges left end, a willow in level sprouts from its own island. Its near-black bark is in striking contrast.Mist on a lake in grey morning. Dark green trees in full leaf cover an island in the right of the image. The little bird is viewed from its left, and above. It peers intently into rushing water from its twig perch that almost touches the water. Despite its name the bird’s back and head are almost blue, its sides bright yellow. Its flight feathers and tail, so long it’s cropped by the frame, are black, yellow and white.A proud, black-crested bird, the grebe floats facing the viewer’s left, its head high. It looks calm, yet alert. Red-tan and black feathers mane its white face. Its beak is the fine spear of a fish-eater. Its grey and tan back it dotted with orb-like drops of water, unable to soak its waterproof feathers.

Two from the National Portrait Gallery floors yesterday, and one from Gospel Oak Tube some years ago. #SundayPix #SundayPixMosaics
A round pattern mosaic floor design in tans, blues and greens with a tree or frond theme. It’s all set in a cream coloured background with occasional small tan and yellow squares. The perspective is from an angle from eye level, rather than directly above.A circular design in a mosaic floor, in tans and blacks. There is a castellated theme encircling the capital letters NPG. The N and P share a vertical line and the G is looped around the middle of them. It’s all set in a white or cream background dotted with occasional little tan designs. The perspective is from an angle from eye level, rather than directly above. Top right a person’s feet in white trainers and blue jeans appear.A London Underground corporate roundel for Gospel Oak Station is depicted in very decorative mosaic, with a wide variety of different shaped tiles, contrasting with the overall neat geometry of the logo. There is a small scarlet heart icon between the words GOSPEL and OAK through the middle. The whole is set on a red brick wall which itself has a very particular bond pattern that varies subtly at the right of the image. Three small square blue ceramic plaques are arranged to the bottom right of the mosaic.

How would it change football if a 0-0 draw counted as 0 points each? With the reward of a point the only losers now are fans and TV. Especially away fans. Where one team is a yo-yo club and a game gets to a late stage they’d have nothing to gain by parking the bus. Any down sides? Has it been tried?
