If a president wanted to become effectively a dictator, he’d likely: 1. Purge govt of non loyalists 2. Weaponize law against opponents 3. Use military to police opposition strongholds 4. Threaten media, schools, businesses w penalties to get them to heel 5. Change election rules in his favor.

I think the most wrong I have ever been as a political scientist was when I said in a public forum in 2020 that there would not be political violence in the US (Jan 6 was 2 mos later). Tonight’s purges are a clear precursor to more future such violence. This is textbook authoritarian abuse stuff.

It is clear that a lot of the existing leadership of the liberal order is largely weak, indecisive, risk-averse, and ineffectual. This is not proof of the failure of political liberalism, but it does mean that much of today's leadership is going to have to be replaced with militant liberals.
