Yeah, I mean we see it constantly, "designers" balking at the idea of a 100+ page rulebook as if literal children weren't devouring that type of work at the medium's early heights. A lot of heady "look how tight my game is, there's nothing to it" mixed with a deep infantilism of the playerbase.

Fundamentally I think a lot of the people making that stuff are doing it to *say* they made something about something, rather than to see people *play* something. It's the difference between wanting to be a game designer and wanting to design games, imo. I have vanishingly little respect for it.

I feel like a lot of people are hung up on making commentary works or "art pieces" (for lack of a better term given games are art etc etc) instead of like, games. The callous part of me thinks that's just because it's a lot easier to make the former.

You're basically saying it's entirely possible provided we don't acknowledge the actual part of the system that prevents it from happening. It's a given that yes, knocking a hole through a brick wall and installing a machine of a given size is doable, but that's not really the contested part.
