To be clear, any mayor or city council can do their own version of this in their city. The differentiator is will, or excuse. If they’re not, it’s because they’re choosing not to, either because they’ve wrongly convinced themselves they can’t, or because they don’t want to badly enough (or at all).

Covid in 98% of airport air samples. A reminder that you can wear an n95 when you travel, even if you don’t wear one all the time, and why wouldn’t you want to avoid getting sick while you’re on a trip?

With our kids now #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re afraid of. If more kids walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a LOT of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school as a result. HT Ian Lockwood. Spread the word.
Cartoon of a mom and dad with a kid in front of a minivan. The parents are saying “there is too much traffic for Billy to walk to school, so we drive him.” The caption at the bottom says “traffic inducing traffic.” Let kids walk and bike to school, and tell your leaders to make that trip safe and enjoyable for kids and families. #LetKidsWalk #LetKidsBike

I moved to Victoria from Ottawa 7 years ago and these are some of the many things that I love about living here. Bathrooms, water fountains, bike valet, cleanliness, whimsy. I will add flowers. Municipal governments all over Vancouver Island plant flowers everywhere. Life can be beautiful.

"Every time someone takes a journey in a car, the lives of others are made worse. Each journey entails harm — to human and non-human life and the environments that support such life. Mostly, that harm is not intended." ~ I especially like this (the very crux of the problem).

No, you can't go ambling round local open spaces to collect free fruit by cycle, including the transportation of your long-pole fruit picker and getting the fruit home again. #CarryShitOlympics #ScrumpingByCycle
A photo of a side view of a large Dutch bicycle with red pannier bags towing a small black trailer with a pair of side by side wheels. In the trailer are green and red apples.

Leant against the bike is a metal pole with a red cage with prongs filled with apples.

The background is scrub land.

Cycling side-by-side isn’t bad behaviour—it’s human behaviour. It’s how parents talk to their kids. How friends catch up. How communities form. If bicycle infrastructure is too narrow for people to ride and talk together, the problem isn’t the people. It’s the infrastructure. Nørrebro, Copenhagen.

It’s almost like historians know stuff, even those who study the medieval and early modern history of trade. “The Strait of Hormuz mattered because it was… the junction of the overland and maritime trading systems of Asia. It matters today for precisely the same reason.” sldinfo.com/2026/03/the-...

What is “the E-Bike Effect?” “Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%.” Fewer car trips. Via @lloydalter.bsky.social

Women are underrepresented in economics. Our research is overlooked. Yet women economists disproportionately work on income support, tax policy, care, labour market inequality. We study the economy we actually live in. That's not a coincidence. Happy IWD to the women doing the work anyway. 🌹

“Looking at a 3-mile radius from the downtowns of 142 US cities, roughly 66,000 acres are consumed by highways — land representing an untapped development potential of more than half a trillion dollars…that fallow land equates to about $5.2 billion in foregone property tax revenue every year.”

Many people still think of poverty as something that happens when people don’t work. But the reality is different: majority of people who live in poverty in Canada are working or live in families who work. @gillianpetit.bsky.social and my 2026 chart to watch www.theglobeandmail.com/business/eco...

The Epstein files document what many women researchers have long experienced but rarely seen laid bare so starkly: exclusion operating behind closed doors, shaping who gets funded, invited, mentored, and taken seriously. How many of these networks, norms, and gatekeepers remain in place?
