It's been quite a wild (weather-wise) couple of days, so watching waterfowl has been a nice change from bashing bushes for migrants. The female King Eider at Lerwick came close enough to photograph, and 6 Greater Scaup and lots of Whooper Swans were nice to see at Spiggie RSPB.

After days of empty bushes on Shetland, yesterday's raging south-easterly winds brought loads of birds! As well as seeing the 'headline' Siberian Blue Robin, I also found 2 Little Buntings and an Olive-backed Pipit. Great way to spend your birthday 🎂

Bev Craig elected mayor of Greater Manchester in huge Labour victory over ReformMeanwhile, it is Reform's third disappointment in Greater Manchester this year, after failing to win in Gorton and Denton or Makerfield.
Nigel Farage's party were made early favourites by the bookmakers when this by-election was first mooted, having performed well in the local elections here, winning 24 of 25 seats available in Wigan in May.

USA was always going to struggle against higher level players. They looked the part up front but had no midfield and a weak defence. The decision to suspend Balogun's red car is not over. It will see an end to Infantino and inspire an overhaul or abandonment of FIFA in favour of a new body.

Physicist & chemist Marie Curie was the: + First woman to win a Nobel Prize + First person & only woman to win twice + Only person to ever win a Nobel Prize in 2 different sciences: Physics (1903) & Chemistry (1911) Marie Skłodowska Curie died #OTD in 1934. #WomenInSTEM
A striking black-and-white studio portrait of Marie Curie (1867–1934), the legendary Polish-French physicist and chemist who revolutionized modern science by discovering radioactivity, polonium, and radium. As the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields, her profound historical significance is reflected in her serious, deeply introspective expression. Photographed from the chest up, she looks directly at the camera with an intense, analytical gaze. Her graying hair is styled in a soft updo, framing a face etched with a look of quiet resolve and intellectual focus. She wears a dark, textured jacket over a shirt adorned with a distinctive geometric, black-and-white checkered pattern at the neckline. The portrait utilizes a stark, dark, textured background that blends into her clothing, creating a high-contrast composition that draws complete focus to her face. The overall mood is solemn, dignified, and powerful, capturing the essence of a brilliant academic pioneer who dedicated her life to scientific discovery.

Reform stamping their little authoritarian feet demanding a general election is farcical. They’re either unelected themselves or they’ve become a recycling bin for Tory MPs who thought they’d do better with a turquoise rosette, but refused to give their constituents the same choice. Sod off.

Do you think the press is this clueless? Did they really not see a strong Burnham win coming? Or did they push the version of events they themselves favoured? They’re not impartial. They decide who to promote, who to shun, who to scrutinise and who to wave through. They influence rather than report.
The British Press is Deeply out of Touch

The final big lesson from this result is how deeply out of touch most of the British media is with what is actually happening in the country.

At the start of the Makerfield campaign, most publications quickly published pieces about how the constituency was "turning to Reform" despite it being obvious from the start that Burnham had a very good chance of winning. As it quickly became clear that this was the case, the press instead turned towards the narrative that the contest would somehow be
"gifted" to Labour by Rupert Lowe and his far-right Restore Britain party splitting the vote on the right.

In reality not only did Burnham win more votes than Reform and Restore, but he won more votes than all other rival parties combined.
This huge win was an outcome that almost no commentators saw coming, despite almost the entire British press decamping en masse to the constituency.
