I think the tricky thing about IES money is that it’s good for two years, so even if they spent all the money that was set to expire, that doesn’t mean they spent the allocated money.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

I don't understand why they can't solve this. It seems easy enough to allocate all 1st round votes to candidates, and then second, and so on, and then see who top two winners are.

I would guess it's the delivery method: 1-to-1 or small group interventions tend to have larger effect sizes, especially if providing a supplemental intervention.

Betsy Wolf @betsyjwolf.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I guess it's not a great time to point out effect sizes are often incomparable across studies and smaller than you think they are. Still, I support looking at general patterns of effectiveness, just not rank ordering policies by their effect sizes.
