🧵 As front-page headlines go, this has to be one of the most misleading I've seen in a long time It's an out-and-out lie But notice the trick they use to get away with it...👀 *They're* not lying - they're just quoting someone else who is👍🏻 In this case, the leader of the opposition🙄 1/33

They've been doing small screenings for farmers, local wildlife groups etc for a while, and I went to a preview in London, but I think it's on in mainstream cinemas from October. It's really funny, and I came out feeling a little more optimistic about the prospects for humanity than when I went in.

In times when a single difference of opinion can divide people into viciously warring tribes, this film was an encouraging example of how two sides can talk and learn from each other (I saw a preview a couple of weeks ago; out in cinemas next month) www.theguardian.com/film/2026/se...

‘The man’s a psychopath when it comes to hedgerows’: Derek vs Derek, the unexpectedly heartwarming doc about farmers at war
One Devon farmer, called Derek, is committed to rewilding his land. His neighbour, also a Derek, tends cattle and crops. What happened when a film-maker decided to follow the bickering pair?

Very odd to have a scam via physical letter, though - the cost of postage would seem to make it not worth it for the sender. Have you had anything delivered recently that might have incurred customs duty? I was hit with a huge charge for something from Denmark last year (thanks, Brexit)

A suggested statement for Andy Burnham.
‘The British public decided in the 1930s that they would not tolerate black-shirted militias marching through their streets. They would cherish robust political argument; they would not accept thuggery and intimidation. When Oswald Mosley led his Blackshirts to Cable Street, local people turned them back. A new law – introduced by a Liberal, backed by Labour and carried by a Conservative majority – banned private militias, political uniforms and ‘the use or display of physical force in promoting any political object’. The British people are as determined today as in the 1930s that they will not accept the methods of Mussolini and the Munich Beer Hall. This government will uphold the law and defend the traditions of British democracy’.

As a veteran of probate/funeral arranging/house clearance for two parents and one husband, I absolutely agree. And one thing I have learned the hard way this year (partner's family will nightmare) is that if you name executors in your will, make sure they are younger than you and willing to act.

Having now dealt with the deaths of two parents within two months, let me just say that the kindest thing you can do for your loved ones, at every stage of life, is assume that some of them will outlive you, and make that as easy as possible for them, logistically. it sucks and it's morbid, but.

Also in London lots of self-employed white working class men in the trades (Reform's base?) are disproportionately affected by ULEZ, LTNs etc. I live round the corner from Frost and plumbers etc want to arrive before 7am or after 10am because of LTN road closure times.

The M5.2 in Nepal wasn't an earthquake. USGS relabeled it "M 5.2 Landslide," depth 0.0 km. No quake trigger, no GLOF evidence, no rain reported below. A glacier snout appears to have failed on its own. Ice in rock joints loses up to 78% of its strength warming from −10°C to −0.5°C. Still frozen.

A friend found this clipping in some old files. Haven't seen this before. Mind blown.
Color political cartoon by Danny Hellman from the New York Press dated October 6-12, 1999. In it, Donald Trump and his then wife Marla Maples being shown a model of the White House with many added stories and a shiny gold T on the top, with Taj Mahal towers on the side and flags flying with a T. It is labeled "Proposed White House Renovation." A ghoulish Philip Johnson says, "Granted, It's in violation of several of Washington D.C.'s landmark and zoning codes. But of course as president of the United States..." Trump, licking his lips, says, "It's tremendous, Philip, when do I move in?" The caption beneath is Spectacularly unqualified egomaniac Donald Trump contemplates a White House run"

Yesterday I went to a small gig in a community garden. I had to set up an account with a ticketing provider to buy tickets, and download an app to be able to use them. Multiple forms and verification codes later, when I turned up, they waved away my phone and ticked my name off a list.

Is there any source for London casualties involving taxis, which might be a relevant stat to talk about? There must be a few, but a big chunk of the 1600 national road deaths are high-speed crashes on rural A-roads - not really Waymo territory.
