We literally have more statues of colonizers than of any women in our history. I'm curious who is represented by the other two statues of women and where they are located in the province? Once they replace Amelia Earhart, will gov consider adding more statues of women from our history?

Shocking fact #3: with only two statues of women left standing in NL, they equal the number of statues dedicated only to colonizer John Cabot (Bonavista & St. John's) Shocking fact #4: we still have statues dedicated to colonial slave-traders like Corte-Real www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6893114

Agreed - we need meaningful implementation & focus, regardless of title. I worry that without a dedicated Minister; these issues will fall to the sidelines among many other portfolios deemed *more urgent*. I raise this critique in hopes that he will reinstate WAGE in the new post-election cabinet.

Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
Since the creation "Status of Women" in 1971 under Pierre Trudeau, Mark Carney's 2025 election/war-cabinet marks the first time in more than 50 years that we do not have a dedicated champion for gender equality in cabinet. Yes, he can still fix this on May 12 - which is why people raise the issue.
010
Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
Sure - he did not eliminate the file, but he did eliminate the Ministerial role - meaning it is now just one among many files to be managed by a single person: Minister of Canadian Culture & Identity, Parks Canada & Quebec Lieutenant. Is Parks Canada more "war-time" than Women and Gender Equality?
200
Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
Broadly, the removal of WAGE in 2025 marks the first time in 50 years that there has not been a dedicated champion for gender equality in cabinet. This has been widely criticized by people/groups advocating gender equality, which is why we are voicing this concern in hopes it is fixed on May 12.

Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
Interestingly, the role first appeared in cabinet in 1971 under Pierre Trudeau - known then as "Status of Women". The role has evolved and been been renamed a few different ways in the last 50 years, notably to "WAGE" under Justin Trudeau in 2018. This change may be contributing to the confusion.

Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
I genuinely hope this is all this was... and that Carney will restore WAGE and other social portfolios in the post-election cabinet on May 12. So far, he has made no clear commitments to restore WAGE. Which is why many groups are raising this issue in hopes that he corrects this in the new cabinet.
010
Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
This is not misinformation. Carney eliminated WAGE from cabinet in March when he became PM. People have been raising this concern since then, in hopes that he will reinstate the role in the new post-election cabinet on May 12. He has not yet made any clear commitments to reinstate WAGE.
110
Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
By that logic, why form a cabinet during the election at all? Why only remove some? Choosing to eliminate existing roles for a temporary cabinet signals that he doesn't see those issues as a core priority, or as a liability during an election cycle. I hope he corrects this in the new cabinet.
100
Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
Even if it was just during the election, the elimination of a minister of WAGE looks like a calculated move to appeal to conservatives who have long dismissed gender equality policies as unnecessary identity politics. Carney has an opportunity to clarify his stance in his new cabinet on May 12.
000
Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
If he makes a commitment to reinstate WAGE and other missing cabinet roles in his new cabinet post-election, I'll happily tell that part of the story too. That hasn't happened yet - we raise this criticism in hopes that he will correct course in the new cabinet on May 12.

Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
It's also the first time in decades that the file of Women and Gender Equality will be led and overseen by... a man 🙃 Carney also eliminated Minister roles for youth, official languages, diversity, inclusion, persons with disabilities and seniors — all included in recent cabinets.
000
Berty Leamon (she/they/he) @bertylicious.bsky.social · 09/05/2025
Because the work of WAGE used to have a dedicated Minister, Office, and funding to advance relevant programming and services in this area. It now sits as one file among many for the Minister of "Canadian culture and identity, Parks Canada and Quebec lieutenant", meaning WAGE is not a priority.

One of the very few re-elected NDP MPs posted on Twitter that she found out Don Davies is her party's interim leader "through the news." Yikes. It also doesn't help that they picked a white dude and didn't even bother to tell his colleague, who is an Indigenous woman...
NDP MP Leah Gazan tweets "Great finding out through the news.... Go "team" NDP," responding to a post that reads: "Don Davies is the new NDP interim leader, formerly a labour movement lawyer with the Teamsters, now the MP for Vancouver Kingsway"

Former NDP MP Rachel Blaney replies to Leah saying: "Not unexpected. Love you Leah Gazan"

@bsky.app really feels like old Twitter and I'm loving it! I used to post regularly on Twitter before it became X and was taken over by right wing trolls. Now it's so toxic I won't even open the app. I hadn't opened it in a while, and this is what my notifications looked like: Stop pushing PP!

Disappointing to see Conservatives claim voters didn't "understand" Poilievre or were "misinformed" about his hateful, "anti-woke" messaging. You can't claim to support 2SLGBTQ+ peoples while also claiming to only be aware of "two genders". Voters understood PP - and voted against him. #cdnpoli
