Please enjoy this ridiculously cute butterfly, which was about the size of my pinkie fingernail. It's in the butterfly family called metalmarks (Riodinidae). Males, like these, have reduced front legs and perch using only the rear 4 (females can use all 6). Sarota acantus; Costa Rica 🐙🌿 #insects

#SamediCuiCui Lorena Kloosterboer...

A photograph of sand tracks leading gently toward the calm sea on Luskentyre Beach on the Isle of Harris. Their subtle curves draw the eye across a minimalist landscape, where soft, blurred clouds drift above distant mountains. The monochrome tones and smooth textures create a quiet, meditative mood that reflects the peacefulness of the Outer Hebrides.

An oldie that was partly inspired by a conversation with the great birder Laura Erickson. The name Bufflehead actually comes from the buffalo.
A comic titled Misheard Birds of North America. There's a ruffled grouse wearing ruffles, ribbons, and pearls. There's a pleated woodpecker wearing a pleated collar and skirt. There's a morning dove sitting on a coffee cup that says MONDAYS CAN KISS MY CLOACA. There's a greater and lesser scope, part duck part scope, with the lesser scope shorter. Finally, there's a buffalohead, a bufflehead with the head of a buffalo.

A spectacular jumping spider from the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. We found a clearing with several of these tiny (around 3 mm.) spiders in the leaf litter. Females are also colorful, but not quite as vibrant. (When I get an ID I'll add it in the comments.) 🐙🌿📷🕷️ #arachnids
A macro photo of a jumping spider on a decaying stick, front three-quarter view. The spider is spectacularly colored - dark, nearly-black body and legs with yellow-orange patches on the abdomen and face, and metallic blue hairs on the legs, palps, chelicerae (mouthparts that end in the fangs) and on top of the head just behind the central eyes.

Look. At. This. (!). A fungus spore landed on this weevil. Grew inside and caused it to climb to the top of this plant- while the fungus killed it. Consumed its body. Used that energy to shoot up a red fruiting body to release more spores. To zombify more weevils. A mind controlling killer fungus.

Yertle, the mud Turtle. Tortoise Beetle, Cassida subreticulata, Found in the Dordogne, France, on a first warm day after a very long period of cold and rain. This specimen was covered in a mud crust. Anyone knows of adults going into a diapause and hiding in the ground? #ElkeDagEenInsect #Coleoptrea
Yertle, the mud crust covered Turtle. Tortoise Beetle, Cassida subreticulata. Bueatiful beetle with transparent shells like a tortoise, with turquoise-blue shields and yellow, green and gold on the head. I often spend a long time taking in situ images of rare and less known species. This way I often came across less known or described behaviour. This Tortoise Beetle was seen in the Dordogne in France, on the first warm day after a very long period of cold and rain. I did not touch the beetle and he was clearly covered in a 'relatively old' mud crust. This makes me suspect that the adults can go into a diapause and hide in the ground. Another possibility is that the larva spends a part of his life in the ground. I could not find anything about these phenomenon in literature.
