How not to do industrial strategy: make all your upstream inputs from steel to energy to components more expensive.

And it misses the fact that the Trump administration just supported domestic solar manufacturing with minimum import prices! The reality is always more interesting than the narrative.

Important to note that this was precisely the strategy that took Japanese auto production global: share value added with your target markets. China, accurately or not, is signaling not that it will wipe out everyone’s industrial base but that it is willing to lift others.

You definitely want to check out our latest data toy: THE CLEANTECH MANUFACTURING FDI EXPLORER My favorite tool is the firm-level view--you can just pick a company and quickly see where they've deployed foreign investment at a glance. Congrats to Praveena and Tim from my team for leading this.

Here’s an indirect effect of the China shock 2.0 that may have a big negative climate impact: By weakening VW and strengthening AfD, it not only hurts a potential ally in decarbonization (auto needs to be in the climate coalition in Europe) but raises the probability of revanchist energy policy.

Actually lots to learn about substitution and the history of REE in the piece, but ultimately Lovins has missed that prices crashed precisely because of Chinese mining policy in the 2010s, not because of geology. Refining rare earths is actually hard!

Time to check in on this 2017 call to not worry about rare earths because substitution and efficiency gains will resolve all the problems...

Europe needs Japan and Korea’s industrial base, as well as Canada and Australia’s resources. This piece is spot on. The Industrial Accelerator Act has to recognize those partners so they can build integrated supply chains.

Yet another international economic meeting derailed by U.S. insistence that market/non-market is a useful and meaningful distinction. We are entering a new economic order that needs new principles that dispense with this dichotomy and recognize that all states act strategically.

More details from Bloomberg www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Bloomberg quote: "During talks over the wording, China proposed a tweaked phrase that would have addressed trade imbalances without putting a spotlight on the nation’s SOEs, according to the people familiar. Chinese negotiators privately received support from some countries for its suggestion, though they failed to reach consensus with the US, the people said."

It is building alternative institutions, e.g. a payment system, and offering manufacturing value-added to many states who respond strategically to its FDI push. Just small steps, but China is heading down this road.

This confusion is due to the prevalent but mistaken use of primacy, dominance and hegemony interchangeably. Hegemony also means being willing to provide collective goods that benefit not just the hegemon but also the states it seeks to lead. Not sure China is any more willing than the US to do so.

Colby wants a Goldilocks level of uncertainty about the US defense commitment: enough that they will spend more on defense but not so much that they will make plans without us. Hard to do when foreign policy is set by the whims of an impulsive leader via social media post.

A characteristically sharp read from @himself.bsky.social that picks up on my argument on AI hyperregulation and traces how national security tools have become instruments of domestic political control. You cannot build sweeping discretionary powers abroad and then be surprised when they come home.

The problem for European carmakers is as much that they prefaced future growth and profits on sales in the Chinese market which are rapidly evaporating: "cheaper, domestically produced electric vehicles have been gaining share at the expense of the premium cars" that BMW and Porsche specialize in.

A fun one from research for my book project, CLIMATE GEOPOLITICS. Lighthizer arguing that protectionism is the authentic tradition of Republicans in 2008. For Lighthizer, conservatives from Hamilton to Lincoln and Reagan embraced a pragmatism that led them to reject free trade dogma.

Unless they’re tracking Chinese clean tech export data - which I think only Ember does consistently? - all the energy scenarios models etc are just plain wrong.
