For today’s long run, I decided to drive to Le Buet & do a loop of Barrage d’Emosson & Refuge de Loriaz. Freddie hates the car, but trying to get him used to it. I also haven’t been up there this year & not sure when the snow will make it impassable. First pic view to Vallorcine & 🇨🇭

Rehabilitation continues with a slightly faster run on flatter / non-technical terrain. Went pretty well, knee was creaking a bit by the end so time to rest up. Beautiful autumn day with the colours starting to pop. Saw a parapenter who’d had a bad landing 😬 #trailrunning

The final Big Mountain Trail Club run of the year! Nice chance to catch up with some familiar faces over a run & a free beer. I even won a hat in the raffle! Love talking to Chamonix trail friends - always doing the craziest & most inspiring adventures. And the knee felt good 🤞🏼 #trailrunning

Ok that was weird, felt like my right leg was learning to run again from scratch. Had a couple of moments when it folded a bit & had some numbness in right toes. Uphills were v slow with short strides. BUT no major pain & feels like progress. And it was a “physio approved” activity #trailrunning

Physio today; he thinks injury not serious 🙂 just inflamed Pes Anserine from overuse. Rest until Weds then some jogging & build slowly. Should be ok for Majorca 🤞🏼 Will add a weekly strength session in for glutes & hamstrings 🤮 - luckily there is a gym 50 metres from the house, trial session 16/10

Went to a wedding on Thursday where, despite best intentions, I drank too much 🤪 The last 2 days have been miserable (exacerbated by getting injured & feeing down about that). Alcohol is a real depressant for me, brain chemistry is only back to normal today. Any upside in no way worth the payback.

Had to DNS my race - no way the knee was in a position to take it on. Walking is ok, but cannot bend the right leg enough to run, so instead i caddied for my son at his first golf tournament. Not a bad consolation (although I’m obviously gutted)

Pes Anserine Bursitis - anyone had this injury? I developed pain below / inside of my right knee yesterday. Painful to bend the leg. Perfect timing for tomorrow’s race ☹️ Is there a quick fix that will allow me to run relatively pain free tomorrow for 3 hours? Icing / resting at the moment

Long run: forgot phone so no photos. Disaster! Luckily it was Strava’ed so have proof it did happen. Another run similar in distance & elevation to Saturday’s race. Felt really good, hope can keep the good feels until then. #trailrunning

Ended up having a double day; uphill tempo session this morning as planned. Had a look at the Ascend app later and saw what I thought was a non-running activity and it turned out to be leg strength - hiking uphill & running down 😫 I did an hour rather than 90 mins so not too bad #trailrunning

Some friends did an insane ridge route on Friday from Mont Buet to Moede Anterne refuge. Luckily, I was working. My very unfazeable friend described it as “terrifying”. Marked as a normal path, it was more via ferrata with 500m+ sheer drops. They had no mountaineering equipment 😬

Did a loop that is similar profile to my race in a couple of weeks although slightly shorter. Tired on the first climb but legs came back in the second half. Lovely run & good prep: 22km / 1,075m D+ / 2hr 40m #trailrunning

Sense of overwhelm is creeping back. Too many things going on; work, new school year admin, kids sports clubs, client trips to London, family visits, home refurbishments, rental property issues, pets, orthodontists, no free time, falling behind with training….. 😩 Need a week / month on my lonesome

Got bitten or stung on the leg by an insect yesterday morning whilst running - didn’t see what it was, quite painful but thought nothing of it. This morning my whole lower leg is swollen. Any advice? Pharmacy for anti-histamines?

Update. I took Tommy to the vet, he had a check up & blood test (€280 🙄) and the good news is no tumour 🙌 However, he has significantly elevated hormone levels which are likely due to thyroid problem so has to have heart scan & thyroid / blood pressure taken in 2 weeks (separate appointments 💰💰)

After the disappointment of TDS, excited to start a training block for Els Tres Mils 55km race in Majorca at the end of October. “Only” 2,400m vertical so no monster hills. More speed work & less slow grinding. Looking forward to getting the VO2 max up & spending some time in zones 3 & 4. #ETM

One positive about dropping out is that I got the chance to cheer on the finishers today. I ran with this guy Liam for a few hours before DNF’ing. A really nice young bloke and fellow Derbyshire man. He just finished now in 44.5 hours 🤯 We had a good chat at the end. Huge respect 💪🏼

The TDS - another DNF 🥺 The weather gods had some fun - 1 hour after the start on an exposed climb to a col at 2,600m an unforecasted 4-hour rainstorm started. I had to do a gear change at the first aid station & was soaked & freezing again 15 minutes later. (1/6)
