Another classic, not sure if I've already posted this one here.

Well said, Ben. I have a lot of thoughts, and some things I KNOW are a cause. But primarily what I have seen is that for the last 10+ years, this has been less of a 'community' and more of a 'group of people who do the same job' And that's only going to exacerbate this problem.

Real, genuine support isn't conditional on your successes. People who only care about you when you're working a lot and don't give you the time of day if you're not succeeding... That's NOT real support and those AREN'T real friends.

We need to restore trust in the community, but trust has to begin somewhere. If you identify somebody who is clearly just in it for themselves, don't mirror that behavior. Don't get involved with them. No need to call them out, either. Just shut them out of your life. You need allies, not deceit.

This isn't really meant to be a rant and I don't have some sort of solution for this. I just want newer actors to kind of have their guard up when it comes to some of their peers. Learn who really has your back, who you should support and form friendships with, and who's just using you.

Most of us are highly, highly dependent on collective bargaining and minimum rates to improve our lot in life. The more of us that undercut, scab, and walk all over each other, the harder it is to make a living as a voice actor without doing tons of conventions each year for autograph sales.

It's exceedingly rare for a voice actor to attain such a level of prominence that they can push for considerably higher wages for themselves, profit sharing, better contract terms, etc.

The biggest reason this is such a problem for voice actors is because, unlike legitimate celebrities, we don't tend to acquire individual bargaining power.

Overall though, the general attitude I've seen from some actors is this idea that as long as they "book that role" or "get that convention invite" or "get more subscribers/followers," it's okay to take advantage of or step on the backs of other fellow performers to get what they want.

It could be any number of things that's led to this: The pandemic. The isolation of working alone. Financial instabilities or uncertainties. The natural competitive nature of acting. The economy. Greed. Anxiety. Depression. Envy. Etc.

I don't think there's any one person or thing that's to blame for everything, but it's definitely something I think newer VAs need to kind of keep in the back of their minds. More and more, I'm seeing actors who are highly self-motivated but deeply distrustful of or antagonistic to the community.
