Great point and this is how Scandinavian countries, avatars of social democracy, work. Everyone gets benefits - this ties in wealthier people to supporting the welfare state.

This week's New Statesman column, in which I attempt to annoy everyone by making the left-wing case for people earning over £100k to be entitled to free childcare. If you want a high tax, high spend society, you can't exclude the people who contribute the most www.newstatesman.com/politics/fut...

It is madness The US (and Europe) are weakening Ukraine’s position at the very moment Russia’s own capacity to sustain the war is coming under increasing strain This is now the greatest danger for Ukraine. And it is happening just as Putin is running out of options of his own

Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.

Worth noting also that quite a lot of Tory MPs have been robust on this - Hollinrake and Obese-Jecty for example.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

If I were Labour HQ I would be a little worried about how high Badenoch’s approval ratings already are among Labour voters, even before seeing the clip. Dangerous to underrate her in my view.

Ben Ansell @benansell.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I'm not sure I would strictly 'recommend' watching PMQs but the Burnham / Badenoch exchanges are quite distinct from the last few years not least in that they show two leaders commanding a lot of support and enthusiasm from their parties and with confident deliveries.

Great read as always from @warringfictions.bsky.social - this time on scarcity and fairness (parables.substack.com/p/scarcity-a...)
Graph showing where parties voters stand on the two issues, with Reform and Restore Britain thinking the economy means people like them don't get their fare share, especially because wealth and resources are so tight.

Isn’t this rather different in the age of generative AI though. Regardless of whether being able to look at texts is good or not (could argue either way), it seems to me there is a difference in knowing whether someone actually wrote their exam themselves or not.

Burnham praises Badenboch at PMQs over her conference attack on Reform: "In a spirit of unity... I'm going to commend her for drawing a line... with the party over there for suggesting that her children weren't British... She was brave and she was right to call it out."

Yes that’s fair. Unfortunately for them not as widely shared as superficially looking at public opinion might have you think.

Ben Ansell @benansell.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I'm clearly not their biggest fan, but I think this speaks to a huge mistake by Blue Labour, who seemed to believe that there was an inevitable Labour/Reform face-off and trimmed their sails accordingly. As if one could discount, of all historically successful parties, the Conservative Party.

New IMF forecasts tell you 2 things about UK economy. Firstly, the British economy has proved resilient in face of the Iran conflict: IMF have UK growth as joint second fastest in G7 this year (forget forecasts, in hard data we’ve seen the fastest growth in G7 so far this year)

Indeed. We have more reason than most to keep deficit down.

The UK with joint highest current growth and lowest forecast deficit in the G7 is… um… not what you might imagine from reading the newspaper.

Saying that LLMs “just predict the next word” isn’t the deflation people think, because it puts all the weight on “just.” It’s hard to place limits on what sorts of knowledge and inferential capability might be relevant to next-word prediction.

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played
