We can't seriously expect people to choose rail when it costs three times as much as flying. We need a clear duty on the Secretary of State and Great British Railways, to improve the affordability of travelling by train and make fares fair.

Today MLAs vote on a Bill to give children on free school meals a payment in the holidays, and one change could decide when families actually see it. The DUP Education Minister wants to remove the rule that says payments must start by the next school break. 1/5

The top half shows the Northern Ireland Assembly logo and the heading of a notice: "Education (Holiday Meal Payments) Bill, Notice of Amendments tabled on 7 October 2026 for Further Consideration Stage". Large white and lime-green text on a green background reads: "Voting NO to feeding children looks bad, so the DUP Minister is putting holiday hunger on the long finger & undermining the Bill". Guess what? Gas boilers were once a "middle class technology". So were televisions, and phones. That's the standard trajectory for any roll-out. Build the market, drive down the costs and an exclusive tech is universalised. Or did you have another route in mind?

The growth in the renewables sector would get a major boost if everyone could get grants to migrate off gas to heat pumps for domestic heating. Cutting this grant will cut economic activity and growth generated by this migration. If you want to spend on defence, tax the rich.

This would be economically illiterate & environmentally disastrous - and makes us less secure: undermining efforts to reduce energy bills by reducing dependence on gas, increasing vulnerability to global dictators, driving climate emissions & knee capping a market that’s just beginning to take off
