George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 12/10/2026To those who say "heat pumps are for the middle classes": the whole damn point of subsidising them and rolling out the technology is to ensure that heat pumps are for everyone, reducing our bills, reducing indoor and outdoor pollution, reducing our emissions, while making our homes more habitable. 2152582
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Guess what? Gas boilers were once a "middle class technology". So were televisions, and phones. That's the standard trajectory for any roll-out. Build the market, drive down the costs and an exclusive tech is universalised. Or did you have another route in mind? 1136738
axeedge.bsky.social @axeedge.bsky.social · 12/10/2026The problem we have is that heat pumps require associated plumbing, electrical control and water storage equipment as part of the installation. Out house just does not have the space for the associated equipment. We would need to build a new structure to house it all. 110
Kev @kevd.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Thank you. Holy heck these guys are short sighted. Heat pump subsidy is a defence spend. 0141
Cllr Sam Casey-Rerhaye @samcaseyr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026& the very worse thing you can do as a government is constantly turn the tap off & on for any industry. Business needs certainty above all else to establish skills, supply lines etc etc. This ridiculous stop-start-stop-start is disastrous: I wrote a report on this for South Oxfordshire in 2020! 170
Gillian @gillianography.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Underfloor heating: seen as a middle class luxury, but I hear rumours they’re putting them in social houses because they’re more energy efficient, which makes sense. 000
LindyWilliams3 @lindywilliams3.bsky.social · 12/10/2026This proposal to remove a green subsidy is yet another indication of @uklabour.bsky.social lack of any real committment to action in climate change. Soon we will hear about Rosebank and Jackdaw, probably when conman B thinks we're looking elsewhere, such as during post-budget discussions 010
Alan Clarke @alanclarke.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Presumably rather than leverage middle class savings accounts for the early adopter capital investment the treasury would rather pay full cost themselves 010
grazor1979.bsky.social @grazor1979.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Totally agree, subsidise heat pumps not drilling for new oil. 010
hawksland.bsky.social @hawksland.bsky.social · 12/10/2026This will do to the pump installation industry what the cut to solar export subsidies did to the solar installation industry. Companies were wound up, guarantees worthless and as well as the insurance backed guarantees. People paid a lot of money for systems which if a panel failed had no recourse. 010
aiteall.bsky.social @aiteall.bsky.social · 12/10/2026'Build the market'? Will the Market bring the solution to the ecological crisis? 000
seacide @antiseacide.bsky.social · 12/10/2026The thing with heat pumps is the technology - not much more complicated than a domestic fridge - has been mature and proven for years. The problem today is the financial cost of heat pumps + installation have been massively inflated making accessibility limited. Jon89 @jon89.bsky.social · 12/10/2026The issue isn't directly about cost. It's that generally poorer households are effectively Banned from installing them. Renters and flat owners can't benefit due to red tape, not cost. Same goes for electric car chargers. 000
