this is why there needs to be severe punishments when someone rapes and reparations made. softening the idea of rape as and issue of miscommunication is offensive to the lived experiences of victims and infantilizing rapists. it takes accountability off of the rapists and places it onto the victim

acting like rape is a misunderstanding may be a tempting way to self soothe about the realities of sexual violence but is ultimately incorrect and victim blaming. it is not the responsibility of victims to educate a perpetrator, it is the perpetrators responsibility to not rape

One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

There is a tendency after high profile sexual violence to turn every conversation to prevention. Resist that temptation. It allows perpetrators and those who enable them to escape accountability. And every prevention program is undermined by a context where violence happens without consequence.

Disabled people are over twice as likely to experience sexual assault than non-disabled people. In the US specifically, 2 in 5 women who experienced rape are disabled. Among US men who experienced sexual violence, 1 in 4 are disabled. Sexual violence is an issue of disability justice.
