Something which I feel could be getting lost in the hype is that there's other options (outside of Big Tech) for getting the usefulness of "machine learning" for ordinary people, which could deliver better economic benefits as well, such as a lot more jobs.

New art about the problem of being "the human in the loop" 😬 I support the calls to *slow right down* on the big decisions, and work with all communities waaaay more carefully.
Crop of poster with text: Humans are in the loop, on background of big black brushstokes and primary blue splotchesCloseup - big blue splotches, some back paint, and cream letteringCrop from a second poster, with multi coloured paint strokes and dripped lines, and neon yellow text: We're in the loop!

At Te Waihorotiu station this morning for the open day - the wall of kids artwork was getting lots of attention! (Thankfully, seems it'll be on permanent display 🥰
Ka haere koe ki hea? Where would you go?
In 2020, during construction of Te Waihorotiu Station, children from across Aotearoa were asked ‘Where would you go if the City Rail Link tunnels could take you anywhere?’ Over 3,000 of their ideas and imaginations are printed as permanent artwork in the station.

I missed out on being up with everyone @ the dawn service, so made up for it this morning - so beautiful! Photos of the sunrise over Waitaramoa / Hobson's Bay, starting from Ōrākei station, ending up at Te Tinana / Wilson's beach - with the city lights in the distance, and birds down on the beach.
Colourful view, with blue, green, and red, over a body of water towards the city, with the Sky tower visible, and vegetation plus a built roof structure in the foreground. View looking towards the city, with the vegetation in foreground most prominentIn the dark of early sunrise, with the skyline, light blue sky, and wisps of cloudsGrowing light - with a group of city lights sparkling in the distance , and the water looking like glass

Exhibition poster: Rimu-treehut, an environment of images & sound from the Charleston rimu-beech forest. Thistle Hall, Upper Cuba St, 5-10pm Friday 25 July.Exhibition wall text: a 3-d walk-in environment of images and sound. This is lowland rimu-beech rainforest on the West Coast, which is being extensively damaged by unsustainable logging.
The forest is very lush and beautiful and the habitat of a diverse range of native plants and birds.
In an urban context, the interactions of the body and elements of this environment (ie in the use of rimu for our furniture) usually lack integrity because they're implicated in the destruction of the rainforest environment.
The installation will create a space for the benevolent interaction of the body and this particular natural environment in the city.

"On Earth, there is no room for God if there is no room for the human person. To refuse one is to refuse the other," said the pope said, lamenting lack of care for children, the poor and immigrants.
