This stuff triggers my in-built snob-detector alarm. Friends in Oz started a “literary fiction-only book group” that expressly forbade “genre fiction”. I put forward an impassioned argument for mysteries & thrillers, even Midnighting in the Garden of Good & Evilling them, but the snobs won.

OK I left a decade ago but the ABC has been freaking out in a digital age day dream for years & yes I did once say that in a management meeting! It became a place of endless strategy reformulations but little feel for its own culture & traditions.

1st, congrats for the great reach. I think in early 2020s Sstack was heterodox coded, but not anymore. Notes is a game changer, so Elon hates it. Your follow up is a good point, but I guess people can appreciate the connection everywhere now. 'The more the merrier' kinds of work here.

Is it because it’s primarily a platform to self-publish (self-promote?) where there’s no agenda here?

I get much more engagement on Substack but it registers less because I feel closer to my mutuals here, some of whom I’ve known for years now from Twitter. Substack is much more my wheelhouse ideologically, cos it’s an echo chamber of my design!, so why does it feel so impersonal/ less social?
