But speaking of staying in one's lane, can we PLEASE switch the default position from "It's fine to use 'AI' for this thing I'm not an expert in" to "Yeah, I'd be really skeptical of any use cases and need to see strong evidence that it's okay, but I'm not the one who can produce that evidence"?

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

I've hit a point in my job search where I'm lucky if I find one frontend position a day that doesn't have an AI-native/AI-first development expectation, or isn't working on an AI product. This field just seems less and less like there's a place for me in it.

Need to avoid looking at job listings until lunchtime- taking that much psychic damage from trying to filter out all the ones with "AI-first/AI-native development" job requirements is not a good way to start my day (especially when it's all of them).

Edible Frog sketches from this morning. There is a small creek in my district, I've started birding here. I regularly go there for sketching, frogs have always been one of my favourite subject, they pose so well. And the waterlily leaves are great for practicing mixing greens.

There's an NFT "gallery" that was open for like 20 minutes years ago that has been closed and empty since and whenever I pass its stupid empty dead husk I cheer its demise like it's the first time.
Empty storefront gallery with a couple abandoned tall chairs inside. The front has black panels above the windows and doors, with "innotArt Chicago" and "Chicago's First NFT Gallery" written in white in the blandest "techno" font possible.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

It’s really something how people get up in arms about accessibility and equity when the thing in question is pervert glasses or Dark Clippy. I don’t see you folks showing up when Ticketmaster says there’s no way a wheelchair user can come to concerts or that sign language is “too distracting”.

This is fucking terrifying
Separate research supports the concern. Anat Perry, a Helen Putnam Fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute and associate professor of psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, co-authored a paper in Science examining how sycophantic AI responses erode users’ ability to calibrate their own judgment. The paper found that when AI systems consistently affirm a user’s position, the user’s capacity for independent evaluation degrades over time.

Joanna Stern, NBC’s chief technology analyst and author of “I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,” has documented the creep of AI dependency in daily life. Her reporting has shown how users begin with low-stakes queries, such as what to cook for dinner or what to wear, and gradually escalate to consequential decisions about careers, finances, and relationships. The trajectory from convenience to reliance is difficult to reverse once established.

Decided to pull out an important part of the interview. Generative AI is often justified with comparisons to the cost of Amazon Web Services ($57bn) or Uber's ($32bn) in losses, when its costs and losses are hundreds of billions of dollars worse. And there's no post-bubble redemption story.
