That’s my plan! 🩷 by working collaboratively & centering the experiences of those most impacted by systems of inequality!

But it can’t be our only tool. We need to listen to what actual Northside families & families from other high-need communities are asking for, rather than letting 6 senior staffers decide for them. Northside families asked for a stop to the closures, and that drove this resolution.

But you’re right that we have got to work hard to improve outcomes, access, and equity in our Northside schools. But it’s also not as simple as North v South. We have schools across the district in all directions where inequities exist. Per-pupil funding is one of our strongest tools.

The closures were never about saving money or cutting costs - district senior staff stated this plainly. We would’ve continued a cycle of budget woes. The board director for the Northside was an author of the resolution to stop closures because her constituents asked for that.

I’m really proud of us, Minneapolis. We stuck together, we fought for *all* of our schools, we refused to let people pit us against one another. After being on the streets all winter protecting one another, we know how to stand united. But we have more work to do! More from me tomorrow. Love y’all.

Thank you Director Abdi! This is why we’re supporting Abdul Abdi in District 1!!!
Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for the countless hours, thoughtful feedback, and unwavering commitment you have shown throughout the Transformation Plan process. I have listened to you at community meetings, in coffee shops, through emails, and over the phone. Your passion for our public schools has been inspiring.

Through an incredibly difficult year, our students, families, and educators have shown how much our neighborhood schools matter. They are the heart of our communities.

As a proud MPS parent and your elected School Board Director, I do not support the current plan of schools closing and I intend to vote NO.

I believe our focus must be on strengthening our schools, rebuilding trust, and attracting more families to Minneapolis Public Schools. I remain committed to working together to build a stronger future for every MPS student and family.

This is a major decision that will affect kids, families, and educators across our city. MPS should slow down, hear from more families and educators, and delay the vote so we can get this right.

“solutions like closing schools are not really meaningful solutions,” says christin crabtree, running for minneapolis school board. “what that does is it shrinks the number of kids, it shrinks the level of stability in our district, and we end up responding to disinvestment with disinvestment.”

I've spent today talking to parents & educators who feel abandoned by district leadership. The district hasn’t considered the real impact this will have on our communities. How many families will leave our district? Is there any positive impact their proposals would have on our financial situation?

MPS proposed three different options for a "Transformation Plan" last night. A plan centered around closures as the main strategy is a non-starter. Our MPS kids deserve a plan that treats them as more than numbers on a spreadsheet. Read it here: www.startribune.com/mps-16-schoo...

This is how you bury bad news: call closing schools "optimizing the footprint" and bury people in 100+ pages of charts, graphs and maps that are too small to read.
