In the studio, trying to conjure a wobbly Harry Partch-ish sound blend of Jamaican steel drum and Balinese Gamelan and my dog's water bowl. The tuning of the gamelan is "sour" to the western scale, but blends in nicely with the other sounds. Important for the song that the sound can't be "placed."

Matmos is amazing and inspiring, but I bet our concept is simpler. Ours was inspired by my affection for 1960s LCR stereo jazz records, Beatles records, etc. Where they would compartmentalize a sound (drums only in the left speaker, etc.) and the magic of the song still comes through.

Yes. The BP show at Big Ears will be a surround show. Our version of “surround” involves the audience in the center of the room with the band arrayed around the room facing inward. So the audience is “enveloped” by the band. This involves a custom surround p.a. built by New Forms Multimedia.

This morning, my dog was attacked by a little yippy, mean dog I admit I did not take seriously. The dog was tiny and cute, some kind of chihuahua mongrel. Not scary to me. My dog Stanley is friendly and gentle to everyone and loves other dogs. But Stanley (correctly) clocked this dog as dangerous.

I am a huge Branford Marsalis fan, but I am also kind of scared of him. I’m pretty sure he would not like me if we ever met. (We are not gonna ever meet.) He seems like a hardass to me. I recognize this is probably why his band is so great. I don’t know. I have no real insight into it.
