Truly incredible that this is how the media is choosing to eulogize the longest-serving Republican Speaker of the House in US history, who was a serial sexual abuser of children. For all the talk about "deep state" plots to abuse children, no one even remembers this case.
From CBS News: "Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who represented Illinois for two decades in Congress and was later jailed for violating banking laws, has died."

cutting off military aid to Israel would have made the Israelis think twice about killing two Iranian generals in a strike on an Iranian consular building in Syria, which was what prompted the Iranian response that supposedly prevented Biden from cutting military aid to Israel

altman's "we have to accept some bad things will happen" stuff is what he tells the SVPs about why OpenAI's security posture is essentially "let the models do whatever they want."

a lot of authors have this idea that only their works are copyrighted. that's not true. everything is presumptively copyrighted. you have to have a substantial fraction of every word ever written in order to train a model. if you don't have that, you can't.

the thing is that if you are working in a safety-critical area of the company, you need to understand that (a) your job is to get to zero deaths, and (b) you will not do your job because at any scale you will be trying to guess every 1e-7 event, and you won't. your boss cannot say that is okay.

I am pretty bullish on open weight models and especially the diversity of providers they enable and competition between those providers.

yeah it’s true I guess I was sort of thinking that they all seem to end up there regardless of where they start, Mao’s pluralism seems like one of the few good things about him.

Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 10h
yeah definitely, and I think there are at least a few nominal communists who seem to govern more or less like social democrats so that’s also different. I am mostly thinking of communist single-party states.

I think the common variable here is authoritarianism, whether personalist regimes that enact the specific bigotries of their leaders or more bureaucratic systems that adopt ethnonationalism in an attempt to preserve “unity“ and such.

Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 10h
I mean, is there any variant of communism historical or current that actually managed to tolerate ethnic minorities and such? China is, uh, also not great.

I’m talking about among the electorate, and admittedly sort of in MA especially, which is a specific instance I am salty about. You still see similar problems in the Bay Area too though. But yes I agree, moving in a promising direction on some levels.

I would be less stridently opposed if there were broad agreement that lots of new construction is needed as well, alas…
110
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 11h
yeah I mean as I said in the thread I don’t think it’s ipso facto lethal, that being said, there are many policies that are and there are people on the other side who refuse to acknowledge this as well!
200
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 11h
so you are making it harder for new construction to pencil while also not guaranteeing that anything actually gets built. and the state’s pace of development thus far, while improving on the policy side, is still bad. not a good combo.
020
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 11h
saying you can only set rents at market rate for 10 years severely lowers the value of a project.
110
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 11h
the concern is that the upzoning ain’t gonna happen. and it would have been the most restrictive rent control ordinance in the country by a wide margin, between the absolute cap and the fact that the exemption on new construction only lasts 10 years.
120
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 15h
so I am open to discussing and even changing my mind on the rent control issue, but not when its advocates push nonsense like that. I will never support that kind of policy.
020
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 15h
and the policy that was going to be on the MA ballot this November before SJC blocked it was absurd (capped all increases statewide at 5% or CPI, whichever was lower, with very few exemptions) and would have been disastrous if implemented.
200
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 15h
and even though it may not be always and everywhere bad in every form, it’s also the kind of policy that generates populist upsurge in a way that say upzoning and housing development itself don’t seem to, and those are arguably *much* more important especially long term.
131
Beatricks 🎃 @beatrix.bsky.social · 15h
so, while I don’t personally support rent control policies in general, my understanding is that the literature is at least slightly more complicated than this, and I am willing to compromise if it brings people into the YIMBY tent.

Doesn’t mean rent controls never have any place in housing policy at all, but they have many proven downsides and unless they’re accompanied by big increases in supply they risk making the overall housing situation worse.

What’s the evidence on rent control? I charted the findings from 112 studies: Great for rent-controlled tenants ✅ But: Pushes up rents for other people ❌ Pushes down new housing construction ❌ Pushes down building quality ❌

I think the thread is pretty clear actually but in case it wasn’t: certainty is (loosely) male-coded, uncertainty is (at least as loosely) female-coded, thus LLMs are (again loosely) female-coded in terms of the expectations they place on operators.

while i’m being gender reductive: another reason that @steveklabnik.com and i don’t need to take estrogen to be good at rust is that in our current culture, writing documentation well is a Woman activity, so we’re already transgender just in a different space than the body or the home.

also the reason there are so many transgender people in rust and so many rust people near AI is that rust was the first major exercise in my lifetime of girl-coding a boy concept. rust and AI are both transgender in diff. directions and that’s why people who aren’t transgender are so insane abt em

everybody wants to talk about AI in boy coded words but they can’t do that easily when we’ve spent decades making hard binary logic boy and soft stochastic logic girl. so now boy usage of AI is for scams and cheating and only people skilled in girl logic can talk about it normal rather than batshit

anyway the rest of you might be too afraid to say it but i’m not: a lot of the reason AI is contentious is because it is fundamentally a girl coded computer program being built sold hyped and derided by boys who don’t know anything about it. a lot like binary logic computing in the 80s, actually!

a couple years ago there was a bunch of Male Discourse about a paper talking about applications of feminist-inspired soft logic in computing, where rather than 0/1 no/yes the machine operated on a higher radix allowing for logic primitives like “maybe”, “likely”, “doubtful”, etc

See if you can spot why this makes me upset
Bronze plaque on concrete, text reads:

“Founded in 1878 by Austin and Reuben Hills, Hills Brothers' Coffee became world famous when it invented vacuum-packed coffee in a can in time for the Alaska Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. This complex, San Francisco Landmark #157, was designed in 1924 by George Kelham, architect of many other fine San Francisco buildings. The Mediterranean Romanesque design of the Hills Brothers' building reflects the Arabian origin of coffee and spices; the craftsmanship of its details shows the pride San Fransicans [sic] took in their home industries. In the late 1980s, the building was rebuilt for offices, and the larger [c]ompanion structure to the north was designed in a similar style. T[h]e original south tower was used to store coffee beans, and much of the rest of the complex was devoted to grinding and roasting. For over fifty years the scent of coffee from this building brought warmth to the waterfront even on the coldest of days.“
