Domestic abuse is a widespread issue in the UK. 1/5 people experience domestic abuse in their lifetime (¼ women; 1/6 men) with 93% of perpetrators being men. Children are also highly affected – 1/5 children live in abusive households and 61% of these children are directly harmed by the perpetrator.

On 7 September at 3pm, the UK will have an emergency alarm test, and turning your phone on silent will not stop it from going off. The alarm could put victims/survivors of domestic abuse at risk - especially those who have hidden phones for their safety. Guidance on turning it off in the comments.

If someone trusts you enough to open up about abuse, how you respond matters. Here’s how to support them with care and compassion:

Not all abuse leaves visible scars. Some people suffer in silence, afraid or unable to ask for help. Here are 5 signs that someone you know might be experiencing abuse: If you or someone you know is at risk, reach out for help. Find out more here: bcwa.org.uk. In an emergency always call 999.

They Seem Nervous or Withdrawn – If they’ve become unusually quiet, avoid social situations, or seem anxious around their partner, this could be a red flag.

Unexplained Injuries – Bruises, burns, or cuts with vague or inconsistent explanations could indicate physical abuse.
