🧵/1 Today at Bromley & Croydon Women's Aid, we are taking part in World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is something that touches many lives, often quietly and deeply, and as a charity we are committed to ensuring that our approach is compassionate, safe, and supportive for everyone we work with. 🎗️
An orange poster with a pair of white hands holding up a sparkly yellow ribbon. Yellow, daisy-like flowers are floating around the ribbon.
Above the ribbon, is bold white lettering on a purple background, reading "SEPTEMBER 10". On the bottom of the page, partially covering the hands, is a heading in the same style reading "WOLRD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY".

✨ Childhood shouldn’t be about survival. But for many children in our refuges, it has been. The Giggle Fund helps us change that. Every donation helps us take children on trips and activities where they can run, play, and simply be children again - moments that rebuild joy, confidence, and hope. 💜
A photo of a little girl with dark hair, wearing a white buttoned up jumper. She is laughing.
The photo is overlayed with a title in bold orange letters, reading 'The Giggle Fund' and a smaller subtitle in black reading, 'Little giggles, big adventures - thanks to you.'
The purple and orange Bromley & Croydon Women's Aid logo is on the top right hand corner.

If someone trusts you enough to open up about abuse, how you respond matters. Here’s how to support them with care and compassion:
There is text at the top which reads: 'How do I support a friend who is disclosing to me?'

Below that there is an image of two women sitting on the floor, one is looking encouragingly at the other with her arm around her.

Below that, text reads:

'Check in with them privately and let them know you’re there.

Listen without judgment. Let them speak freely. Avoid interrupting, questioning, or doubting their experience. Simply believe them.

Offer support and resources (e.g., helplines, charities, or safe spaces) but let them decide what feels right.

Don’t pressure them - leaving can be dangerous, and they need to move at their own pace.'

Not all abuse leaves visible scars. Some people suffer in silence, afraid or unable to ask for help. Here are 5 signs that someone you know might be experiencing abuse: If you or someone you know is at risk, reach out for help. Find out more here: bcwa.org.uk. In an emergency always call 999.
Text on the image reads:

5 Signs Someone Might Need Help: Recognising Abuse
They Seem Nervous or Withdrawn – If they’ve become unusually quiet, avoid social situations, or seem anxious around their partner, this could be a red flag.

Unexplained Injuries – Bruises, burns, or cuts with vague or inconsistent explanations could indicate physical abuse.

There is an illustration of two women conversing with speech bubbles between them. The text on the image reads:

Control & Isolation – Their partner dictates who they see, what they wear, or how they spend money. They might cancel plans last-minute or seem afraid to upset their partner.

Low Self-Esteem or Fearful Behavior – They constantly apologise, seem on edge, or second-guess themselves, as if walking on eggshells.

Drastic Changes in Mood or Appearance – Depression, anxiety, or a sudden shift in personality can be signs. They may also stop taking care of themselves.

There is an illustration of two speech bubbles overlapping.

For 50 years, BCWA has been accelerating action - but we stand on the shoulders of giants. As #internationalwomensday approaches, we honour the women who paved the way for change, and we continue to accelerate action towards a world where all women and girls can live safely, free from abuse.

Behaviours such as love bombing, wanting you to spend all their time with you, being concerned about you flirting with others with no reason, and pushing a relationship forward more quickly than you would like, might seem like signs of love at first, but could turn out to be red flags 🚩

The start of a relationship should be an exciting time: getting to know each other and enjoying spending time together. However, sometimes romantic gestures might be masking what truly lies beneath. As Valentine's Day approaches, we want to help you spot the red flags among the roses.
