A Message From Dr. Ganesh Rao:

Friends of BCM Neurosurgery —

Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 15, Baylor College of Medicine will hold its second annual Give BIG Day, a College-wide day of giving to support healthcare, research and education at BCM.

Last year, the generosity of the BCM Neurosurgery community exceeded a $2,500 match challenge and raised over $8,000 to support the Department’s efforts. Inspired by this support, this year I pledge to match any donations made directly to the Department of Neurosurgery, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000. Every dollar goes to supporting our clinical, education and research missions in the department.

I invite all members of the BCM Neurosurgery community, faculty, staff, alumni, residents, students and friends, to join me in this initiative.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity. With your help, we look forward to advancing the field of neurosurgery and improving lives for many years to come.

Congrats to Dr. Justin Lee, who has been named as one of this year's recipients of the @bcmhouston.bsky.social Chao Physician-Scientist Award for his project, "Human Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles as a Therapeutic Strategy for Spinal Cord Injury." #BCMNeurosurgery Learn more ⤵️
Dr. Justin Lee is a recipient of the BCM Chao Physician-Scientist Award for his project, "Human Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles as a Therapeutic Strategy for Spinal Cord Injury"Q: Can you tell us more about your project?

A: “Briefly, this project is focused on developing extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from human stem cells as a potential therapy for spinal cord injury. EVs are naturally released by cells and can carry therapeutic signals that may help reduce secondary injury, promote repair and improve recovery after spinal cord injury.”Q: How will this award support your work?

A: “The Chao Physician-Scientist Award will support critical early-stage experiments comparing different stem cell-derived EV sources and evaluating their therapeutic potential in preclinical models of spinal cord injury. This support will help generate the data needed to advance the project toward larger-scale studies and future grant funding.”Q: What hope does this project potentially offer to individuals with spinal cord injury?

A: “Ultimately, the hope is to help develop a treatment for spinal cord injury, a condition for which there are currently no effective therapies that meaningfully restore neurological function after injury.”

The #BrainTumor researchers at #BCMNeurosurgery are committed to unlocking the mysteries behind malignant and benign tumors of the brain and skull base and to developing targeted therapies to treat these complex conditions 🧠🔬 #BrainTumorAwareness | #Research | #GoGrayInMay 🩶
Meet the brain tumor researchers at BCM NeurosurgeryJamie Anastas, Ph.D.

About the Anastas Lab:
Chromatin regulators are frequently mutated in cancer, and aberrant patterns of DNA and histone modifications discriminate tumor cells from healthy tissue, suggesting that chromatin dysregulation plays a key role in tumorigenesis. Our current research focus is on pediatric high grade glioma (pHGG) driven by histone mutations including H3G34R mutations observed hemispheric tumors and H3K27M mutations seen in diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). Research in the Anastas lab centers on the hypothesis that disrupted chromatin regulation driven by these histone mutations gives rise to clinically-relevant cancer phenotypes including, stem and progenitor-like and drug resistant tumor cell subpopulations.

The overall goals of the lab are to determine how chromatin dysregulation drives cancer progression and the development of drug resistance on a mechanistic level, and to leverage this knowledge to develop new therapies.Benjamin Deneen, Ph.D.

About the Deneen Lab:
The Deneen Lab seeks to unlock the enigmatic biology surrounding glial cell development and function in the brain. Beginning with developmental gliogenesis, we identified the key transcriptional mechanisms controlling the initiation of gliogenesis in the embryonic CNS.

Moving towards function, our recent endeavors focused on decoding the cellular and functional diversity of astrocytes in the adult brain. In both cases, we made fundamental observations about the nature of glial cells and directly applied these paradigms to relevant neurological diseases: brain tumors and white matter injury.

Our view of neurological disease as a recapitulation of glial development has allowed us to make critical new observations into disease pathogenesis. Through this, we have built an interdisciplinary research program that draws on paradigms from development, disease, physiology and genomics to better understand the nature of glial cells in the brain.Akash Patel, M.D.

About the Patel Lab:
Our research lab focuses on determining the molecular underpinnings of inherited and sporadic forms of various brain tumors in an effort to develop targeted therapies to treat aggressive cases.

Projects
Precision Medicine — One of the greatest scientific achievements of our time has been the sequencing of the human genome. Identifying and characterizing the genetic makeup of disease opens the door to precision medicine—the right treatment for the right person at the right time. Precision medicine enables us to determine the basic biology of an individual and tailor health and medical approaches.
At the core of this revolution is the ability to define the genetic blueprint of individuals through genomic technologies and to link this blueprint to biology, health, disease susceptibility and the treatment of illness.
